Victoria River - Katherine - Florence Falls
Sunny, 31 degrees
We left for the trip to Katherine about 10am. We had been to Katherine before so decided to just stay the night and head on. We had limited time now to get to Darwin to drop the van off.
We left the next morning about 9, as we were hoping to get a site in Litchfield, and had heard that you need to be to early. We arrived there about 1pm, and went to the Florence Falls campground. We were very surprised to find that at that time there were plenty of sites. So we chose one near to the falls access and also to the amenities. The campground was fantastic. Very new toilets and showers and all for $6.60 per person per night.
After setting up camp we went for a walk down to the falls. We had been there before way back in 1994! With the kids! And really they were exactly the same! Which was refreshing! Well they had improved the walk down, with better walkways but apart from that it all looked very familiar! And the falls were glorious! Crystal clear pool to swim in. And the water temperature was much warmer than some of the other pools we have swum in. We had a lovely swim and then back up to camp. We had spoken to the couple camped next door earlier. And when we arrived back they invited us to join them for a drink by their fire. We spent a very enjoyable couple of hours chatting to them. They are a Dutch couple, Yoka and Frits. They have lived in Australia for almost 40 years. We got along with them very well.
The next day we spent the morning cleaning the camper van as it has to be dropped back to Darwin the following day. So cleaning the shower and toilet etc. we will not use them again now. Then in the afternoon we walked down to Buley Rockholes, another lovely place we remember from our trip from so long ago. The boys all loved this place! Cascades that just tumble down, and there are deep water holes to swim in as well. It was very popular as it was a Saturday and also school holidays had just begun. People everywhere. But still much the same as before. Very natural. Love it there. On the pathway back to our campground we had discovered a couple of paths down to some other swimming pools and waterfalls so went down there and discovered another cascade similar but nobody seemed to know about it. We had it totally to ourselves! Which was lovely! And so relaxing. Highlight of the day!
Got back to the camp about 5.30. After our showers we went to have a drink once again with Yoka and Frits. They are on a trip for a couple of years, no hurry! We have exchanged numbers and who knows they may catch up with us again when they get to Victoria in a few months! They come from NSW.
