Touch down in Kolkata. It's 3 in the morning and Charlie and I have barely slept in three days. Outside of the airport we are immediately hassled and haggled for a taxi. On agreeing a price we jump into one of the many old vintage yellow taxis. Sudder street our destination. Four things happened within our first hour of landing in India that will ready us for this often insidious but brilliant country.
1. We got ripped off by the taxi driver.
2. We were told we had to sleep on the street until 6 because lazy indian man didn't want to get up.
3. We saw a dead dog.
4. And on a lighter note, we drank some chai, an Indian staple.
Kolkata is the home of Mother Teresa. But where there are saints there must be sinners. The red light district here supposedly the biggest in Asia. This cosmopolitan city has a story to tell and secrets to hide.
A city where the rupees they be hustling the streets they be bustling.
Babu ghats to Bollywood brats.
Chapati rolls, leaves make bowls. Chai tea, banana lassi. Emporiums, bazars, fast cars and the esplanade and of course all the sweets that me and Charlie could eat.
We book an overnight sleeper bus out of the city to the world famous Darjeeling.
