We left chilly Dunedin and made our way up the coast towards Oamaru, we stopped on the way at the Moeraki Boulders which are some rather large boulders just scattered on the beach. As we continued driving, Kam wanted to get something out of his wallet but couldn't find it anywhere. We thought maybe it was in the back of the van so we pulled over and searched and searched and couldn't find it anywhere. So then we had to phone everywhere we had been in Dunedin over the last few days, phone all the banks in the UK to cancel cards, cancel his driving licence and make a police report. We were a little bit stressed when we reached Oamaru, but we had a treat in the evening when we drove to Bushy Beach just before sunset to try and see some yellow eyed penguins coming back to shore. The beach is closed off at this time but you can view them from a fenced off area. We waited for a while and then right in the distance we saw three waddling shapes coming out of the sea. They waddled up the beach and then seemed to stop for a chat! Then they started waddling again and one of them fell flat on it's face - they were so sweet!! It definately cheered us up. On the way back from the beach we stopped near the waterfront in Oamaru and saw a long wooden jetty absolutely covered in birds, it was crazy they were all just sitting there hanging out, it made a good picture!

We quite liked the town of Oamaru, it had some really nice old (for NZ) buildings with interesting art and craft shops tucked away down some narrow streets.There was also the Steampunk HQ which is a collection of old machines that have been remade into crazy inventions. At the front of the HQ was a steam engine being driven by some rather scary skeletons with machine guns!

After leaving Oamaru we headed inland towards a tiny town called Omarama. We took the scenic route through the Waitaki Valley stopping for a walk through the Elephant rocks. These rocks are huge limestone boulders in lots of different and interesting shapes, it was also used as a scene from The Lion the witch and the wardrobe film. We then drove on the Omarama which was literally just a street with a petrol station and caravan park and a few little shops. It was really nice though, we were surrounded by mountains. We noticed as well how suddenly it was so much warmer, we had been in hoodies and coats for the last week but now we could sit out and enjoy the sunshine.
