From Langkawi we caught the 5:15 ferry to Georgetown, Penang which is another island further south. The journey took about 3 hours and they played a violent film with lots of swearing in as lots of kids stood up on their seats and watched! We had been to Georgetown on our previous trip so we were interested to see how it had changed.
We had booked a hostel in Little India called Cocoa Mews and it was walking distance from the pier. We walked by lots of sari stalls and loud bollywood music. It was like being in a clean and orderly India. We checked into our room and were shown round by a man who reminded us of the mad hatter - he was showing us a little kitchen area in the hostel and as he was talking he was filling up a jug with water but he just poured it all over the floor instead but didn't notice at all! We were hungry so headed out straight away for dinner. Penang has some of the best food in the world! Literally over the road from us was a 24 hour Indian called Kapitan, it was absoloutley packed but we managed to get a table - they did naan sets for about 2 pound each where you get a big naan, a massive bit of tandoori chicken with dhal and a mint dip. We both agreed it's one of the best things we've had on this trip - YUMBO!
The following day we had a breakfast of coffee with condensed milk - and I tried Kaya toast which is quite popular in Malaysia, it's a coconut jam - also very yummy. We walked around Georgetown which has some really lovely old Chinese buildings, chinese temples, mosques, hindu temples, catholic churches and other attractive buildings. There is also some amazing street art almost hidden on the side of buildings. We both nearly got wiped out by some mopeds as there aren't many decent pavements around. Our stomachs were rumbling again so we stopped by at Kapitan for some more tandoori chicken. We went back out for another walk - there was a big park by the waterfront where we watched the sun setting, lots of families were out and it was a really nice atmosphere. We had a really expensive beer somewhere and found an amazing food court called Red Garden where you can get all sorts of food including frog porridge!
The following day we went up to Penang hill, because it was a sunday there weren't many buses so we had to wait for nearly an hour in the sweltering heat, finally one came and we went off to get the funicular railway to the top of the hill. It's quite a way up and our ears popped halfway, once you get up there there are amazing views to be seen. We could see the long bridge back to the main road and the new longer bridge that has recently been built. There's a lovely old english cottage and a red post box in one part from the british era. We found a nice lookout point by some picnic benches and sat down for a litle rest but then a big monkey appeared on the fence and then the trees shook and three more jumped down - we ran away quickly as one of them came towards us with their teeth out looking pretty scary. On our way back we walked by some more monkeys and one came running for us - I had my umbrella and Kam had a stick which we both shook at it!!! We finished off our time in Penang with a stupidly expensive beer - seven pound for a pint eeek! And a really cheap bbq pork noodle dish which was about 50p each! The only bad thing about Georgetown is and we remembered this from last time is the rats! Big rats everywhere, especially at night all rummaging through bin bags nice!
