We arrived in P.E.I. and headed for the capital city of Charlottetown and found a fine camping place over looking Charlottetown Bay.
It really wasn´t what we expected as a camping place but it was late and we needed a place for the night. It was a motel and RV camping place. Then there was the big lawn for the campers like us.We set up camp and then decided because of how late it became to try and find a place to eat dinner. We did make a quick stop at the local supermarket to see if we could buy beer there.Unfortunately there was only the beer and liquor store that sold that pleasure in P.E.I.The time was 21:30 and we headed for Swiss Chalet for chicken dinners and then home for a good night sleep. When quickly jumped into bed because the mosquitoes were in full force.
We woke the next morning and went to Tim Hortens Donutsfor breakfast and then into town to check it out.Charlottetown is a very big city for a small province but the downtown is quite charming with the old buildings and their own little harbor front. We spent a nice few hours there before we returned home to relax in the sun.Upon our return to the campsite, we began to remember the mosquitoes from the night before.I´ve seen some type of mosquito net or rather cage in Canadian Tire, a kind of Danish Silvan. The cage was for ourselves to keep the blood suckers out. It was worth a try if that could help.To our delight, the net turned out to be one of the best investments so far.We can now enjoy the outdoor living at night without the insects.
It was once again great to crawl into our little home on the prairie. The following day, Km wanted to go to see Ann of Green Gables. It was located in the eastern town of Cavendish.I myself didn´t know this lady existed.Well she didn´t really exist. It was Lucy Montgomery. born in 1874 who was the author of Ann of Green Gables.Apparently there was about 10 books on the subject. Now those of you who know me well, are aware that I myself have read a book.It just wasn´t one of her books. They also made a few films about her. Once again, not a film I´ve seen.
We made a quick stop into town and then returned briefly back at camp to get the map of P.E.I.Right behind us was a four wheel drive vehicle who stopped just behind us at our campsite. My first thought was that they wanted to make sure we paid for our campsite that day.Not the case.He saw the Danish license plate and was curious as to where we were from.Had a nice chat with Al and his son Jacob. We told him we were on out way out to get a bite to eat before heading for Cavendish. He said we had to stop and Gilians in Montague. A quaint little harbour town. The food was excellent and the price´s cheap. When we arrived at Gillians, it was like taking a trip back to the sixties. You parked your car in a numbered parking spot, turned on your emergency flashers for service and then the waitress comes out, takes your order and brings your food out to the car when its done.Kind of reminded me of the program Happy Days.Didn´t see the Fonz though. From there we headed for Cavendish.Just love the rolling hills of PEI.The fields after fields of newly planted potatoes. The potatoe plants are a little farther behind her in Canada no doubt because of the weather. Finally arrived in the town of Cavendish. It is designed for tourists. Everything for everybody. Golf, go-carting, amusement parks, restaurants and of course Ann of GreenGables.Saw the house and the famous grounds were the films and books took place. Then it was back to our home in Charlottetown. Set the Gps for home and then the rest was easy. Its been really great having the Gps. We can drive down just about any road we like and if it's the wrong way it gets us back on track without worrying about a map.On our return to camp, we had some new guests. Six people to be exact. The nicest and friendliest people.Km became a little concerned for them at one point because we thought they all had a bad case of emfazima. It turned out they were constantly smoking some type of wildwood weed. No doubt some of the strong stuff.
Packed our things the next morning and on our way out of the campsite, made a quick call to Km´s mom to see how she was doing. All was well on the home front. We were headed for Nova Scotia on the Ferry from Woods Island. Trip costed a mere 39 dollars with tax. This was the last time we saw our wildwood friends.
Next stop… Cape Breton and the Cabot Trail.
