Well it is my last day in Koh Samui, for I am off to probably the shortest trip to Phuket in history. I thought I was suppose to fly out of BKK on the 7th, but it turns out it's the 6th. I was going to do Phuket for 2 days including the travel time to get there, because I want to go to Kanchanaburi; which is 3 hour bus ride from Bangkok. So now I'm going to arrive in Phuket around 5 pm and then the next day take a 13 over night bus ride back to Bangkok, just so I can see Kanchanburi. But that could all change depending on how Phuket is.
On day 3 in Koh Samui, I decided to ride my scooter all over the island. It cost 200 baht ($6) a day to rent and gas was about 200 baht. And literally I put on over 150 km all over the island. I learned a few valuable lessons along the way as well. Besides the obvious driving on the left hand side; I learned not to smile while driving. And secondly, Thai's have a very sneaky radar system. Yes I got caught in radar and got my very first speeding ticket. Technically I wasn't the only tourist pulled over, for there were alot of us. So I pulled over had my mini little court session and then paid my fine of 300 baht ($9). Was I actually speeding that's to be debated, but did the local police make their monthly quote in about 3 hours of work, more than likely, yes.
As I travelled up, down and across the island, I made frequent stops at tourist traps and attractions. Most memorable, was the king Cora snake farm. If you wanted to know "sketchy" this place had plenty of it. I was 45 minutes early for the show so I walked around the park looking at various snake/crocodiles and even a set of mongoose. So as I am walking around none of the vegetation is maintained and there is overgrowth everywhere. Or as I called it, prime hiding spots for snakes to say hello. Try to remember zoo's or aquarium's in North America are the exact opposite of Thailand's. Not clean, not very maintained and usually rely on a "common sense approach" to everything. If they have a crocodile pen that's only has a 4 foot high fence, and you feel the need to get closer or jump in; well by all means it will save the zoo on food cost. Another awesome experience is when I was by the python cage, it was about 10 foot wide by 40 foot long. I went from right to left looking for the snake and couldn't see it. Well as I got to the left hand side of the cage, the door to the cage was wide open. And remember I am surrounded by overgrown vegetation with no one else around. Let's just say I got the "front door" out of there quick.
From there the cobra show started, they brought out scorpions and cobras for people to touch and "pet", I wasn't feeling that so I declined. However, when the pythons came - they were obviously longer and easier to handle - so people were more inclined to touch them. I really didn't want to do that either, but this 10 year old girl did it so, I felt I had to maintain what little manhood I hadn't screamed off already. So I held it for a few seconds and afterwards still wondered why people played with snakes. No thanks people. But that's enough about the snake farm, I wont even go into how one cobra found a hole in the fence and decided to sign autographs for the crowd (see Facebook photos).
After that I went to the aquarium of all places and saw some Bengal tigers, never seem them before so that was pretty cool. Oh and I also fed some sea turtles, obviously just another day abroad.
So I think in total I put on about 150-200 kms and about 5-6 hours of driving on that scooter. Anyone who goes to Thailand, rent a scooter it's fun, cheap and a super easy way to see things at your own pace. Oh and if your "not" like me and don't mind messing up your hair, wear a helmet. Love you mom.
Cheers from Thailand.
