Greetings yet again. I am certainly dragging this morning! However, I thought it would be best to blog before heading over to the Kakum rainforest. For those of you who didn't know, Ghana played the USA in the first elimination round of the world cup last night. I had mixed feelings going in because a person should obviously route for their own country in such a match, but I chose instead to cheer for Ghana. Americans have so many sporting teams and sports "heros" for our youth to look up to. Here in Ghana the children don't have as many positive mainstream role models, so it is nice to see the ones they have succeed. Also Ghana is the only African team left in the World Cup. It has been inspiring for me to see the way an entire continent is uniting behind this Ghanaian team. Wow, I get off topic easily. Where this was originally headed is... We went out to a pub to watch the game last night. It was packed beyond capacity and some people were watching from over the fences outside. Others were packed into homes fortunate enough to have televisions. I stepped out for air at one point and the city looked like a ghost town. Once it became evident that Ghana was going to win the entire city errupted out into the streets. There was dancing, drumming, and singing all night. The nearest comparison I can conjure in my mind was the night the Colts beat the Bears in the Super Bowl and WishTV showed people rushing out of the bars into the Circle downtown in Indy.
Enough about football (aka soccer)... Yesterday during the day we went to the Bonwire Kente weaving village. I was not overly impressed by the village because Lucas had already taught me how he did the kente weavings. From there we headed towards Kumasi and went to a bead maker village. I loved seeing how the beads were made from start to finish. I don't know how the men and women sit and paint all the little details onto the beads by hand! It was some crazy stuff.
Today we are headed into the rainforest for a canopy walk. It should be a good and frightening time!
