The bus ride was quite comfortable. We watched the movie Captain Phillips (good one, try it :)) based on the real story of a captain getting hijacked by Somalian pirates. Tom Hanks is awesome in it. We arrived earlier than expected, around 08:00 and after a little walk we arrived at our hotel. We could not find cheap places in Hoi An so we had a hotel for 16$ per night. But, breakfast was included and they offered free use of bikes so that evened everything out quite allright.
After having breakfast and dropping our bags in the room, we got on the bikes to drive around the old town. Hoi An has the status of being on the world heritage list. It was an important city for trade and economics back in the days and the town is well preserved. We bought a ticket which allowed us to visit 5 of the 23 old buildings in town. Some were pagodas, other were old bridges, houses or communcal places. We asked the lady for some recommendations and were on our way to a bridge, temple, old house and other buildings. I didn't find it all too impressive but the town had a very relaxed atmosphere and it was really nice to just cycle around. We had a local dish for lunch, Cao Lao, and bought some home made donuts along the road. We returned to the hotel quite early and on our way back we saw a football field so in the evening we went out to play some football again. After an hour we left again to have dinner and get some good night rest.
The day after we went to the My Son complex. This is an old site with temples from the Champa culture. We rented a bike through the hotel and drove the 50 km to the site. On our way there we got a flat tire but luckily a local jumped on his motorbike to get a mechanic from the nearby gas station to help us out. We payed 15$ for a new inner tube and the changing of the tire. We also offered the local some money for helping us out but he kindly refused while smiling. We took the flat tube with us to show to the bike rental that we put in a new tube. The mechanic did not leave when we did so we're guessing that he got a share of the treasure. When we arrived at the My Son complex we strolled around the ruines. It might sound a bit spoiled, but temples are not that impressive anymore since I have seen a fair share of beautifull temples already. Same same for My Son; it was ok but nothing compared to an Anghor Wat haha.
And that was when the fun started. When we got back, we asked the lady who rented us the bikes for some money since we spent 15$ for the new tube. She started raising her voices, saying that she didn't know what we did with it and that she gave us a good bike. So we explained that we just drove and got a flat tire, nothing special. The tire was already fixed four times and guess what, at some point it is not fixable anymore... The lady wanted to give us a 2,5$ discount for the rental and that was far from reasonable in our eyes. I understood ofcourse that she would not pay the full monty since she could have done it way cheaper but this was unacceptable. I told her that she could pick up the scooter at night because we still wanted to use it. When she left, I insisted to Philipp that we would get the flat tube back in her scooter again because there was no way for me that she would get the new tire. We drove to a nearby motobike dealer and the mechanic was flabbergasted when he finally understood what we wanted him to do. We payed 1,5$ for changing the tubes, pushed the motorbike to the hotel and did not pay the lady for the rental. We gave the new tube to the hotel and they gave us 2,5$ discount on the bill.
At night we went for dinner in the old center. We drove our bikes through the streets that were lit by a lot of lanterns in different colours. It added more atmosphere to the already relaxed center. We had a nice dinner, hotpot with seafood, and went to bed early because of a 3 day motorbike tour we booked! We've heard great stories about easyriders in Vietnam, motorbikers who drive you to the most beautifull routes of the country. The driver will be your guide for the entire tour, making stops at nice and interesting places and will include a hotel in the price. We wanted to go to Hue through the Ho Chi Minh trail which is said to be amaying so we did. I was a bit sceptical at first because we read a lot of good reviews but also bad reviews of other travelers with easyriders. Since it is quite a lot of money, 50$ per day (without food and entrance fees) per person while I usually spent around 25$, we did not go with anyone who offered us his service.
We walked into an office and the lady rang mister Chinh for us. We had a small conversation on the phone and since his English was good we insisted that he would be our guide (in some reviews on Tripadvisor a different driver showed up, not speaking good English at all). After making a down payment of 100$ we awaited mister Chinh on the 27th in our hotel. The scooter with the flat tire was not picked up yet, a shame that we could not see her face when she arrived... Mr Chinh showed up, we discussed our plan for the upcoming days and we went on our way to Ho Chi Minh trail with Philipp and Mr Chinh on a bike with his luggage and me on a scooter with my own luggage.

Jeroen en Saskia Hoi Huib wat een mooi verhaal. Maar groot gelijk je hoeft niet alles voor lief te nemen. We hebben genoten van je foto's. Vooral just hanging around deed het. We verwachten natuurlijk wel een door jouw klaargemaakte maaltijd als je thuiskomt. Veel liefs en voorzichtig op die scooters met al die slechte wegen. Jeroen en Saskia
