It's a beautiful snow covered day here in Whistler, at last we've had some fresh snow which has sprinkled a rather lovely sparkly covering over all of that disgusting dirty old snow. It's been seven weeks since we arrived and we have been extremely slack at updating our journal...oh dear. James almost has an excuse as he's been making the most of the vast array of terrain here on Blackcomb and Whistler. I on the other hand have a little less reason to excuse myself. A couple of weeks in to our ski season I took a tumble and damaged my knee. Now, many weeks, physio, Dr's appointments, and an MRI later it's become clear that I've torn some ligaments and will be looking forward to surgery when I get home! Well not quite the end to our trip we'd planned but it could be a lot worse! Having rather more time on my hands one would imagine I could get my arse in gear and get this site up to date but clearly that has been a challenge so far! Trying to rectify it now though.
Time to back track a couple of months and update briefly on the gap between leaving Jakarta and arriving here in Whistler, after a lovely first wedding anniversary we left Jakarta and flew to Singapore on the first of four flights in about 36 hours. Me being me I was super excited at the plethora of aviation related activity, James on the other hand was rather more concerned at the imminent sleep deprivation. Courtesy of our lovely friend Alice, we were able to stay at a rather nice hotel at Changi Airport (aforementioned airport has previously been blog worthy as it's fabulous!). Well our hotel didn't disappoint; lovely room, rooftop pool, air con and a truely rocking bathroom with glass walls and Frangipani flowers. Ta bird.
From Singapore it was on to Darwin, Cairns and finally Auckland where we were greeted by friends of James's family, Giles and Suzy, who so kindly played host to us for a week in Gulf Harbour, just north of the city. Whilst the weather wasn't that kind to us, the shops certainly were, somehow were both able to pick up skis and general ski paraphernalia for a bargain price. Thank you southern hemisphere. Running across Auckland laden with goods to catch the last ferry of the day wasn't quite so much fun.
One extremely relaxing week later we were taking our penultimate long haul flight to Vancouver. Finally heading to Canada after so many months away, the ensuing temperature change was rather concerning, plus 30 degrees to minus figures did not appeal! Arriving in Vancouver we were greeted with Christmas lights and cool temperatures, time to get our Christmas on!
A little jaunt up the sea to sky highway on Christmas Eve brought us to Whistler, snow capped mountains and roof tops bulging under layers of snow, quite simply beautiful. Finally somewhere to call home for more than a few days and we were both ridiculously excited at the prospect of unpacking! No more backpacks for a few months at least. Christmas passed in a bit of a blur, somewhat alcohol induced! A highlight had to be a full on Christmas dinner complete with pigs in blankets. The house is perfectly located in Upper Village, a few meters from the slopes and skiing on Christmas day was a novelty we'd love to repeat in years to come. To top it all our housemates are all splendid.
We promise to update a little more frequently in weeks to come! Off to meet my hubby on the mountain in a couple of hours for some kind of surprise activity...exciting!
