Helen's Travels
After Jenny flew home from Brisbane, I decided that I needed a rest from the East Coast way of life so flew down to Adelaide. Despite everyone asking why the hell I was going, I decided it was a good idea! As soon as I stepped off the plane I realised why, it was freezing, flip flops were really not the right choice!
I spent 3 days in Adelaide which was seriously enough. There wasn't a great deal to do but I spent the majority of the time chilling and even learnt how to play poker (more successfully than Tenerife!!) I also met up with a friend from Uni and with limited choice of things to do in Adelaide, we were reluctantly fairly cultural....well we visited an art gallery, museum (for about 15 minutes), the Don Bradman collection, and then in the afternoon we fitted in the Botanic Gardens, Rose Garden and even an indoor rainforest, with time for a couple of drinks at the end of our hectic day!
I left Adelaide on the Oz Experience to Melbourne along the Great Ocean Road. The first day we went to the Grampians National Park and climbed up Hollow Mountain, which as the name suggests has a hole in the middle of the mountain! The view from the top over the Grampians (hills) was amazing. We also managed to fit in the McKenzie Falls, not as impressive as Lake McKenzie and it also involved decending about 500 steps, at least our legs got a bit of a work out!
The next day we went for a walk and saw millions of kangaroos. It was a complete change from seeing just roadkill! They were really brave though and let us get really close to them - got some good (ish) pictures. We then started on the Great Ocean Road, with the first "limestone"" section. We saw all the landmarks, Bay of Islands, Bay of Martyrs, The Grotto, London Bridge and Loch Ard Gorge, all of the sights were amazing, and the drive along had stunning scenery. At the end of the day we saw the sunset over the 12 apostels, well actually only 8 are left!
The final day of the tour saw us enter the "rainforest" section of the Great Ocean Road. We went on a Tree Top Canopy walk which was fairly cool, well really good, only made by a members of the groups excellent commentary! We headed to Apollo Bay for lunch and then onto see some Koalas....would you believe in a caravan park! There were millions, there's meant to be one koala in any km square because of hte amount of food available but in this section we saw a good 2 or 3 in a single tree. From the Koalas we continued to Bells Beach to see some surfing, I've got a long way to go! Then we went to Torquay to get some bargains in the surf shops, I was very restrained though!! That night we arrived in Melbourne which is where a lot of the fun began!!
I was in Melbourne for the weekend as were a few people from the bus so we had a couple of good nights out. We also saw the sights of Melbourne, well went shopping and got the free tram around the city!! Oh we also ran through the fountains (thanks Zara and Sarah), basically there are these fountains along the river in Melbourne that spray intimitently and if you time it right you can run through them and stay dry. Four of us tried it and really guttingly all got pretty wet!!
The highlight of Melbourne has to be NEIGHBOURS!! We went on the Neighbours tour and the night. The tour was cool but the cheesiest thing ever. We sat on the bus watching old episodes of Neighbours, we saw Libby and Drew's Wedding, Libby's baby, Jim's death and a few other random ones - it was classic though. Then we got to get out of the bus at Erinsborough High School, the driver got the sign out of the minibus and we all stood their posing! - would you believe that it was raining though?! - In Erinsborough!! We then got back on the bus and drove past the building where it is all filmed to Ramsay Street. As everyone says, it's tiny! We got there and the driver got out the Ramsay Street sign and again we all stood there!! It was fun though even with the cheese factor. That was one dose of Neighbours for that day, the next was the Neighbours night which has to be up there as one of the best nights ever! We got the the Elephant and Wheelbarrow and took our seats ready for the night. Eventually they were announced and out came Kim, Stu and Harold to the Neighbours theme tune! After they all chatted for a while a quiz started and the cast members came around to have their photos taken with us. Ã'll put them up as soon as I can I promise!
