Week Severn - Bali, Krazy Kuta, the Glorious Gilli Truangra and that dam elephant forbidding flu!
We was up early for our flight to Bali, with a stop in Sigapore. Our first destination was Kuta. We arrived in the evening and hoped into a taxi to our pre-booked hostel (the first time we had pre-booked since we were in Ho Chi Minh). We dropped off our bags, got changed and went to scope out the area. It was mental. The strip was full of drunk Aussy's shouting and dancing. Within our first 5 minutes we found a guy collapsed in his own sick. Kuta to Australia is what Spain is to England, a quick easy get away to loose yourself in sun, sand and alcohol. We had a couple of drinks in some of the bars and ended up in a bar called Rocket drinking the cheap Bali beer. The bar was busy and we managed to grab a seat next to some locals who were having a dance off. Let's just say, the Bali boys have got moves! We ended up dancing with them and partying all night.
Knowing our time for cheap luxuries was coming to an end fairly soon we decided to have a treat day. We treated ourself to some local stall dresses and also happened to stroll upon a Topshop, opppss! We found a Falafel restaurant and decided to eat there, I'd been craving a humous fix since we left home and this was going to hit just the spot. I had an Italian falafel and a side of humous. Heaven! On the walk back we stopped off at a Salon and treated ourselves to our last £4 pedicure. We went back to the hostel to pack ready for our departure to Gilli T the following day, that night we met up with the locals an partied in a different bar, it happened to be a fairly early night.
The following day we were up and ready for our transfer to the ferry, it took us about an hour and a half crammed at the back of a stuffed mini bus before we got to the pier. The ferry arrived and we hopped on, in 45 mins we were pulling up on the beautiful beach of Gilli T, and of course, it being a simplistic beautiful island and all, I fell in love. We hadn't booked anywhere to stay but headed to a recommended hostel called Gilli Backpackers, the hostel hadn't been there long but was absolutely ideal for travellers. Shared dorms, a great pool and a huge rock climbing wall for everybody but me to jump off. We checked in and went to explore and discovered everything happened on the beach, we found a nice restaurant on the sand and treated ourselves to a meal. I had a smoked salmon and cream cheese wrap with a pint of cider. An actual proper pint, of cider. I'd been craving one ever since we left home. After, we decided to get a nap in ready for the full moon party that evening. We were super excited after missing the full moon party in Thailand. Passing into practically a coma, we woke up super late and almost missed everybody leaving the hostel, we got ready in no time and headed on out with everyone. The party was amazing and situated at a bar on the beach. We drank the local spirits and downed a few Joss shots which were pure adrenaline shots, everyone was raving about them so we decided to have a few. The music was so good and we were absolutely raving our heads off and before we knew it, the sun began to rise. I checked my phone and couldn't believe it was 6am, we were having such a good time that we lost all concept of time (that happened alot)! We decided to sit on the beach with all the others lost to time and watch the sun rise, it was stunning, better then most of the sunsets I had seen, I walked back to the sound of prayer and climbed into my top bunk. The island had a mosque which was heard all over the island when it called the locals to prayer.
The next day we chilled and lazed around the pool and gained a few new friends. A group of lads from Manchester and two girls Nicole and Marlin. There was a specific place on the island where the sunset was meant to be seen in all of its glory and so we headed there for a drink with a view. The sunset was beautiful and lit the sky a pinky red colour. On the way back we stopped at the food market and got some fresh food. We arranged with our new buddies to have a chilled one to coincide with the islands quiet night and we went to the cinema to watch The Wolf of Wall Street. The cinema was a little shack with a projector screen against a wall with rows of random chairs laid out. We even got free popcorn! After the film it was straight to bed.
We woke up super early for the island snorkelling trip, we were to visit a spot on each Gilli Island and snorkel for a hour or so cruising around in a traditional long boat. After a brief rant with Alex over suncream (it's about as extreme as they get) we hopped onto the long boat. Putting my snorkelling mask, mouth piece and flippers on I jumped into the water and it was breathtaking! The water was a wonderful shade of blue and was so clear. There were hundreds of different fish all over the place fluttering around the coral. It was like watching a 3D film, it was so surreal. The guide jumped into the water and handed out some bread, he swam down to the bottom and all the fish flocked to him and ate the bread out of his mouth. Of course then we spent all day doing the same thing. We stopped on Gilli Air for lunch and ate in a dainty little beach shack then went back to the snorkling. The tour finished around 4:30pm and we headed back to get changed and go grab some food with the girls. We headed out to a place called Shisa where they had previously ate, we added our new roomies to the table, three lads called Tom, Lex and Dale. It ended up being one of my best meals yet and everyone was jealous of my Chicken Satey. We all went out with some others from the hostel and had a great night in a bar called Jungle bar, cheap spirits, lots of Joss and another late night hearing the call to prayer on the walk home.
We again ended up chilling by the pool all day with our new crew, Alex actually ended up bumping into a girl in our hostel who she used to hang out with in Uni, she was Bex and was travelling with her friend Demi. We sat around the pool with a certain type of smoke and nodded off. A few hours later we headed out with our full crew in force, it was mine and Alex's last night on the Island so everyone got involved to say Goodbye. We all danced away, sweated, drank whiskey, guzzled Joss and carried through to the early hours.
The next day our ferry was due to leave at 1pm, I felt awful. I rarely suffered a hangover in Asia no matter how much I drank but rumour had it I was having a Joss hangover, however I was pretty sure I was actually getting the flu from all the late nights and partying we had done is Asia. The crew sat around in the shade and we played darts until it was time to go, we said our Goodbyes to our new friends and dragged ourselves to the ferry for one more night in Krazy Kuta. Once we arrived, having already seen the strange Kuta strip we decided to have a light mooch, book an Elephant ride for the following day and have an early night. The night ended up being earlier then planned as it became official that I was coming down with the flu. The night was horrendous, one minute I was sweating, then I was cold, I tossed and turned all night sniffling in bed.
It was finally time to go and see the elephants and we had saved it till our last day in Asia, Alex woke me up and I could hardly move. The flu had well and truly taken over, absolutely gutted I sent Alex on her elephant trip and stayed in bed a fluy mess all day. We were catching our flight to Sydney that evening and I was dreading it. Alex came back and we wondered to the shop, I hadn't eaten all day. We booked our taxi and fought with the guy on reception who wanted me to pay for an extra night for staying in bed, we eventually came to an agreement. In the taxi we spoke about how us being in Australia in a matter of hours hadn't touched base with us what so ever. I had had the best time and seen the most wonderful things whilst travelling Asia and I absolutely did not want to leave but it was time for a new experience and new part of our travelling trip and so with bags in tow, my last super cheap ice coffee and with a high intake of paracetamol we checked in and boarded our plane to Sydney, Australia.
