I took the train into town again and set my sights on the Maritime Museum. They have an actual building, but also a destroyer, a sub, a replica of Captain Cook's ship, and a collection of other smaller boats. I was initially disapointed as the HMAS Vampire, the destroyer, was closed for rennovations. That's the ship I most wanted to see. The submarine was great. My tour guide has served on subs for several years in the sixties and was definately an "old salt", complete with great stories he probably wasn't supposed to tell. The actual museum was good as well, though I had trouble settling in. It had very little structure and no real path through everything. I particularly enjoyed the displays on the Australian Navy, HMAS Sydney, Regattas, and around the world solo cruises. It took some time to move through everything and I was a little overloaded when it was all done.
I spent the rest of the afternoon walking trough Sydney and secured a sleeping bag for the upcoming camping trips. Chinatown was pretty cool and then you walked through a kind of Backpackerville. They had all the services I would need: travel agencies, hostels, internet cafes, second hand traveling equipment.
