I have just arrived at the source of the River Danube here in Donaueschingen, Germany. I hadn't planned on doing the whole drive in one day but having set off from Teià at 6.30 I was able to get a good start. The journey up to La Jonquera was stress free and before I knew it I was over the border and into France. I was greeted with rain which didn't last too long as I made my way up the western side of France. Sunflowers and lavender made the drive that much more pleasant as the extortionate toll rates and diabolical French radio were beginning to play on my nerves.
The hours seemed to fly by as did the kilometers. Before I knew it I had already done 500km by lunchtime. The stupid woman on the GPS had me going the even more expensive way, twice! Wanting to take me through Switzerland. After a few turnarounds and finally talking to my brother I managed to get on the right road. When I finally decided to stop and eat some lunch at 2pm I was pleasantly (un) to find that the motorway cafe was closed, too late to eat lunch in France it seems and to top it off a coach load of OAPs made their way to the toilets, slowly.
After 1000km I decided it was time to find something to eat seeing as the last stop had been so uneventful. I stopped ate something and got on my way, still a long way to go. Once in Germany, I felt relieved that the driving was nearly over, little did I know that the last 75km would take me through towns and weaving up and down mountains. As I entered Donaueschingen there was a great storm going on, something that I would get used to during the week. After driving around for a while I finally found a gasthof to stay in although the owner seemed very reluctant to let me stay saying that the only room she had left was under the roof and therefore was very hot, she wasn't lying. Anyway, after a very cold shower, fan on and window open I managed to settle down for the night and began to fret about what I was letting myself in for.
