Walker's Travels in Scandinavia 2017 and others
Day 34 Mon 13 Jun 16, Caiguna to Esperance 575km, cloudy with showers during the morning with blue sky and sunshine from 2pm, 10 (forecast 5) to 20 deg. Last leg of the Nullarbor of what is effectively 1,500 km of straight driving without a lot of variation. That said it was a great experience and we did enjoy just being out there in the wide open spaces. It does make you appreciate the little things as you go along, a "hill", an eagle on a dead roo, a tree, the colours in the sky or the shape of the clouds. Saw lots of birds for such an arid region. Due to the time change we we both woke very early, 3 - 4am. We ended up giving up on trying to sleep and got up about 5am and Left Caiguna just before 7am after a nice hot brekky. Just after starting we encountered the longest straight stretch of road in Oz, 146.6km. The vegetation kept changing, on the western edge of the Nullarbor we drove through 100s of kms of quite tall woodlands, another pleasant surprise. As there's not a great deal to stop for we arrived at Norseman (our planned o/n stop) to find not much at all, so we decided to drive on to Esperance, another 200km. Wendy shared the driving again today and we arrived at the Pink Lake Van Park at 2:50pm. After setting up we went for a walk (5.5km) to the city to stretch the legs. Nice looking place with a great harbour and esplanade. We'll explore it more over the next few days. Dinner was leftover leftovers (veges) with salmon and pork chop.
