Our time spent in Luang Prabang isn't really anything exciting but we really enjoyed the towns peaceful and spiritual atmosphere.
We spent our first day doing our very own walking tour of the town, we past many beautiful temples and ended up walking along the riverside. Around each corner we encountered the differing contrasts of daily life, from tuk tuk drivers offering you a cheap trip and boat owners trying to drum up some business to monks of all ages strolling down the street unberella in hand to shade them from the sun.
Luang Prabang was full of surprises especially at around 5.30pm when the main street was closed off to the night market! Hundreds of stall would line up every night, spending time to arrange their goods so precisely ( I don't know how they have the patience) just to make that one sale. I have to say I could have bought so much but restrained myself to a few painting for my friend.
The next morning we met up with a few people we met on the slow boat to venture to the nearby sights by tuktuk. We negotiated a good price and set off to Pak Ou Cave. It took quite a while to get to the boat crossing through the lush green countryside but we finally arrived and took a short boat ride across the Mekong Delta to the cave of a thousand buddhas (Pak Ou Cave). The opening to the cave was a brilliant, amazing natural structure filled with over a thousand Buddhas of all different shapes, sizes and colours, a wonderfully strange place.
We went all the way back to Luang Prabang town and headed to a waterfall about one hour away through more country villages. At the waterfall there was also a sanctuary for Asiatic Black Bears rescued from poachers, they looked so happy chilling out in teh hammocks :).
The waterfall was ok, the best bit was that you could go swimming, ICY COLD water but so refreshing, I got in after some persuasion from Jh and an Aussie lady. The current was surprising strong and we used it like a ride, swimming right up to the waterfall to be swept away by the current, lots of fun!
Fond memories of this small riverside village and I wish we could have spent a little more time here but Vang Vieng and tubing was calling.
