So yeah two days in and I think most of what could go wrong has found a way to do so... I've lost my card (but I've got another one), got so so lost, ripped off, hit some people (I was so determined not to do that one too!), and somehow this morning managed to lock myself out of my room THREE times! But it's been awesome anyway and I think I'm gonna have to get used to the rest of it, lessons learned etc...
So yeah the flight was fine apart from crazy turbulence and the loudest snorer in the world sitting next to me, Emirates always have great films on offer anyway, who needs sleep! Eventually found my transfer... the hostel's awesome, really pretty and friendly, and there were four other lone female travellers in my dorm so that was good! Wandered out with one of them to find some food on Khao San road, which is a bit of an assault on the senses, but in a good way! Took a picture of a cart selling scorpions and insects, then some drunk english guy decided that I should eat one and wasn't taking no for an answer, decided what the hey when in Rome and had a nice little maggot... yum! Tastes like cicada... which makes sense! So that was the first thing I ate in Thailand, might try and sample a scorpion next!
So yesterday was the bike and bites tour, naturally the first thing I booked in Thailand was all about the food! And awesome food it was! Apart from the tiny drop of spicy sauce that the nice tour woman put on my mussel which knocked out my tongue for a good five minutes and reduced me to a sweaty mess... but yeah that was bound to happen! Also sampled some cow brain which was thankfully covered in some sauce so it was only the texture that was a bit funny! I was so so full though five courses later when I had to wolf down my coconut ice cream (brainfreeeeze) and be swept off to the bikes bit, slightly concerned that I would be sick. Not sure what I was thinking booking a bike tour since biking even in Liverpool terrifies me and Bangkok traffic's a bit mad... It was mainly along backroads though, slightly less scary. We just went past people's houses, highfiving little kids and trying to dodge the millions of motorbikes... Everyone in Bangkok seems to ride a motorbike, even babies! It was a good 4 hour trip, with a few temples thrown in for good measure... pretty awesome all in all!
Went back to the HQ of the bike place for a fish foot spa (sooo tickly!) and some beers, this guy called Neil who was friends with the owners said he'd take me to the bus to get home. It was his last night in Thailand for a while so he was heading to the pub with some friends including the owner of the follow me bike tour, and his thai wife and her friends, and he invited me along. Figured I shouldn't turn down any offers of company so joined them in this english style fairly posh pub where I felt like a total sweaty tramp in my shorts and tshirt. Was only gonna stay for a couple but somehow got enrolled in a pool contest which I failed epically at, and took several photos of this guy who looked like Ricky Gervais.
Decided to head home eventually and Neil walked me to a taxi, where the horrible taxi driver man drove me to the middle of nowhere and charged me three times more for the pleasure! Taxis in Thailand are pretty hit and miss from what I gather, had pretty bad luck so far! Got talking to a very nice and helpful guy called Gabriel who explained Khao San road was miles away, so he helped me find a nicer taxi guy who I was adamant was taking me right to the door, angry Heledd came out a bit there! Got to the hotel where a bunch of people were heading out so I joined them to some club which was pretty cool, where I used the age-old friend-making tactic of slapping lots of people and laughing at them. Oops. But yeah that was good.
Today was a strolling around being lazy day, went to see the reclining buddah (it's giant!), got massively lost a million times onthe way, and discovered that coconut is an amazing hangover cure! (aparently they can use it instead of saline dontcha know!). The Wats (temples) here are pretty impressive, all covered in blinding bits of glass and gold, and they're all over the place, took me a few hours to give up taking photos every 5 steps. And yeah some time yesterday I managed to lose my card (not out though), so that sucks but I can just be more careful with the other one! Off to Chaing Mai in an hour on the overnight train, woo waterfight time! So yeah that was the first few days. I'm sure all my posts won't be this detailed but free internet here woo! That's all for now! x
