Happy Anniversary to us! We went off to find the bus station and book our tickets for San Gimignano and were on the bus and on our way by 10.30. We had to change buses at Poggibonsi and there was a half hour wait between buses so we went to get a coffee. I made our second drinks mistake since we arrived (Tony asked for a latte on the first day and ended up with a nice glass of hot milk!). I decided to have hot chocolate... when Tony brought it back it looked as if it had a really thick skin on it but in fact what I had was pretty much a cup of hot chocolate pudding - not complaining mind you, just not quite what I was expecting.
Anyway, Poggibonsi to San Gimignano took no time at all and were soon wandering around the mediaeval streets and looking in the shops and yes... eating gelato. We climbed to the top of the highest remaining tower (54 metres and don't ask me how many steps because I don't want to know - my next holiday is going to be somewhere flat!). They have paintings on display from the early 1300's and they're not behind glass or any sort of security - it's quite mind boggling. The streets wind up and down the hill in the old walled part of the city and every corner or side alley brings an exclamation of delight. The prices seem to be a little cheaper than Florence too - well... except that you have to pay 50 euro cents (about 80c) to use the toilets! And the whole queueing up for everything has hairs on it. We did have a lovely day though, just taking little side streets and having a look at things before catching the bus back to Florence.
We made a quick stop at the supermarket and bought some bread, cheese and proscuitto for dinner. Back to London tomorrow.
