Leaving the conquered mountain behind us, we set off for Queenstown and had a stopover in Wanaka …. One needs careful pronunciation when saying it out loud. Our Youth Hostel was once again in prime position being lakeside and our en-suite room overlooked the lake and the beach. The town itself looked like it was set up to party but we found problems finding a bar open after 10:00pm.
Queenstown had a strong alpine ski town feel to it, except of course it didn't have any snow. It claims to be the Adrenaline capital of the world, so given the choice of Skydiving, bungee jumping, canyoning, Jet boat rides and paragliding - We opted for a coach/boat trip to Milford Sound (adrenaline junkies or what).
Milford Sound is actually a Fiord (they don't accept the Norwegian spelling) and after a very long coach ride, we spent the balance of the day cruising through it in a boat - It was spectacular but for us Norway is still King of the Fjords. Besides researching the bar culture (Queenstown is the first town on our New Zealand leg that stays up late at night) we also took the skyline Gondola to the mountain top entertainment area, featuring a panoramic view of the town, the lake and the mountains - We watched the sunset and the town lights come on from our lofty perch, indulging Heather's new favourite hobby of photographing sunsets, usually from hills or mountains - This was a welcome relief for Dan because hills and mountains usually have to be climbed first!
