We arrived in Phnom Penh and immediately went to our hotel from the quay via tuk-tuk. We were staying in the FCC (Foreign Correspondents Club) - A bit posh but we felt that after all our blog writing we were among kindred spirits, they also have a happy hour and a jug of Marguerita is $7.50 (Happy Days). A great way to spend an evening on the roof top bar overlooking the mighty Mekong River. The city was vibrant; it had a buzz that only Asian cities seem to have. Apparently, Barack Obama had been in town the day before, for the Asean Conference - He chose not to hang around for us.
The history soon catches one up and we visited the Killing Fields - Under Pol Pot the Khmer Rouge killed nearly 3 million people out of a population of 12 million - You cannot ignore its presence and to stand in the grounds where much of it happened is a moving and saddening experience.
We escaped to the jungle for three days and did some Trekking, Kayaking and extreme Hammocking. The travel instructions were "Get on a bus bound for Koh Kong, after four hours you will cross a river bridge - We will call it the first bridge. After you reach the fourth bridge, tell the driver to stop, get off the bus and walk back over the bridge - You will find a house that isn't built. From the house make your way to the river bank, where the boatman will be waiting; identify yourself with the code word Rainbow and he will ferry you to your destination " …… Bizarrely it held together and we arrived safely. Dan decided to give blood to the local community during a 6 hour jungle trek. They happened to be leeches and despite spending most of the trek pulling them off, Dan's socks were soaked in blood and his legs were very scarred from the bites. Some of the leeches did appear to be staggering as they were removed from his legs (Marguerita blood perhaps). Finally, one of the leeches actually attached itself to Dan's eye (Horror Movie stuff) - Heather calmly screamed as it was removed and failed to get a photograph. That evening we spent in a hammock on the veranda of our Jungle hut watching torrential rain and a spectacular lightning storm - Rain Forest (the clue is in the words).
The local town Koh Kong, was probably the most "authentic" we had seen in Cambodia and we spent an interesting morning in the market (no westerners) with the locals, who were extremely friendly, amongst the very fresh produce of escaping crabs and wriggling catfish. After three days in the jungle, we returned by boat to the "fourth bridge" and waved down our bus. Six hours later we were back in Phnom Penh for a final happy reunion with "Marguerita" before leaving the next day.
