Today we went to Paestum, an incredible place on the coast and around an hours drive - it is an Ancient Greek settlement from 600 BC. The city was originally built and settled by the Greeks then taken over by the Lucanians then finally by the Romans. The river silted up and disease and other issues forced the Romans to leave. The city was inundated by silt and eventually discovered and dug up last century. The three temples stand proud and in excellent condition. The houses and other areas of the city are still evident in the stone roads and building foundations and some columns and walls still standing. We also visited the museum which houses lots of frescoes, personal jewellery and goods found in tombs and many pieces of artwork, friezes and pots etc which was reclaimed in the dig.
All in all a fascinating day and a beautifully maintained place to visit. Because it was the end of tourist season we felt like we were the only ones there. No crowds, it was easy to take great photos without people in them. The only down side to the day was that Sonia lost her phone - it has not been recovered unfortunately. She had a spare she can use but her beloved Note is gone along with photos and other things you store in your phone.
