Sihanoukville was not really on our list of places to visit, however with us putting aside three weeks for Cambodia we decided to head to the coast as our first starting point after Saigon. Also our friend from England, Dave was there so we thought it would be a great chance to catch up with him and say hello. There are many beaches around Sihanoukville so we decided to head to one of the more popular resorts of Serendipity beach. We arrived after a very long daytime 14 hour bus journey to a very stormy sky; one of the most spectacular lightening shows I've ever seen kept us occupied for the last two hours of the journey. Reaching our hotel completely drenched we checked in, ate cottage pie and retired for the night. Waking early the next morning we decided to go exploring. The resort itself wasn't massive and consisted mainly of bars and restaurants. A sandy beach lined the shore so we walked along it for a couple of hundred metres before turning inland and heading back to the hotel; There wasn't much to see. The rest of the afternoon we spent around the hotel pool relaxing in the sun. That night we met up with our friend Dave for some beers and it was great to catch up with him as we hadn't seen him for quite a while. He was telling us about working in Cambodia and all the mischief he had created while he was away. The week continued pretty much the same. We took a trip to the centre of Sihanoukville, again other than another large Market there wasn't much else to see. The weather was mixed between sunshine, clouds and rain the whole week so time by the pool was limited to these conditions. After a few cheap massages at the local spa we generally didn't do much else, if anything we was a little bored. However another dose of food poisoning each we couldn't do much anyway so we had to cancel our only activity planned, the island tour. The only other thing to really notice about Sihanoukville was the amount of Gary Glitters around; Alot stayed at our hotel as it was one of the nicest cheap hotels in the area. This lifestyle was too visible for my liking and it was uncomfortable to watch at the way the Gary Glitters looked and talked to the very young girls. Jonathan was even astounded by some of the conversations overheard and often the girls looked anything but pleased. Also it seemed every TukTuk driver was a pimp. One day we walked out of the hotel only for one to approach us. While I was stood next to Jonathan, he asked him if he wanted any girls. I looked at the man and told him Jonathan didn't need anyone as he was clearly with me. The man ignored me and asked Jonathan the question for a second time. Anger rose up and as I restrained myself from slapping his weasely looking face, I told the driver to leave. However this wasn't the last time Jonathan got propositioned and one night he almost got robbed by one prostitute in a bar, however luckily he realised what she was upto and luckily again he keeps his wallet in his zipped up knee pocket. After a week of these antics I'd definitely had quite enough. The last night approached and we went for one last catch up with our friend. Now it is time for us to head inland and make our way to Phnom Penh to continue our sight seeing. Hayls and Jonathan x
