To add another badge to the backpacker sleeve involved the patriotic trip to the 90th Anniversary of ANZAC Day in Gallipoli, Turkey. It was a cold arctic night, fighting for elbow room amongst a swarm of fellow ANZAConian descendents on the beach of ANZAC cove.
Prince Charles, Johnny H and some NZ woman (rumored to be some ruler of their little island), spoke a few powerful words along with a the futuristic laser show and some token didgeridooing. Touching service as the sun rose, before proceeding up the ridge to lone pine. As the name suggests, it's a pine tree in the middle of the Australian gravesite, left alone by it's other pine mates.
A few mexican waves, some random applause to some champion ol' geezers and the bugle boy, we then scouted around the ridge to mark respect to other gravesites. Along the way we uncovered the original turkish bunkers and dugouts - still intact from 90 years ago.
