The overnight train from Prague to Krakow was spent in a two berth woodgrain shoebox. It was somewhat comforting to have a lockable door after reading about the high rate of petty theft in the lonely planet. Rumours that passengers were gassed become a little more apparent when we reached Poland. The first english tourist guide we acquired in Krakow claimed in a bold statement, "if you are reading this on the overnight train from Prague...DO NOT GO TO SLEEP"!
Krakow is a sexy looking city. It claims to have the largest market square in Europe, littered with a mass of alfresco street cafe's serving cheap Polish piss and cheese pies.
Highlights in Krakow included Oscar Schindler's Factory, Wieliczka Salt Mines and the day trip to Oswiecim, the site of Auschwitz Concentration Camp.
The last night was spent with the riot police whilst waiting for the 2:30am bus to Katowice. Kicked out of the bus station a 11:00pm, we seeked refuge in the nearby train station, where a large gang of no teeth, one-eyed, tattooed forehead football maniacs were running riot. The riot police in robocop gear, contained the situation, but we thought it would be safe if we stayed with the police than stray away - just incase a nuthead might jump us.
Leaving Poland was proving more difficult than entering. Immigration who woke us at 2:00am on the train from Czech Republic, forgot to stamp Riss's passport. It caused alot of confusion from a hoard of various officials, who took the situation like it was a major threat to national security. After plain ignorance and dumbfounded looks we were set free...
