Happy Hippos on Holiday
Hi everyone!
Here it is...our last postcard from Brazil!
Friday morning saw us back on the road and on our way to another island - this time our destination was Ilha Do Mel. After checking in to our beachfront hostel, we set to on what has become one of our favourite island activities and went for a long walk down the beach. This kept us busy most of the afternoon.
In the evening, we found (easily...the island was small) a lovely restaurant overlooking the bay. This was a great spot from which to witness an amazing electric storm...not so great when the heavens opened and water started dripping through the bamboo canopy on the terrace! It did not dampen our spirits, however ... in fact we lifted them ... capirinhas that is. Many a toast was made throughout the evening, first and foremost to Christina, for introducing us to the wonderful world of backpacking on a trip to Peru four years ago.
When we woke the next morning the storm had cleared the air and we set off on another hike before breakfast. Just as well we took the chance to stretch our legs, as then the travelling began in earnest. Over the next 31 hours, we spent 2 hours on a boat, 6 hours on a steam train, 9 hours on an overnight bus and several more hours split between 5 local buses, a minivan, a tourist bus, a tourist train...and a raft!!! At the end of this journey, we found ourselves at the bar of the Sheraton overlooking Brazil and Argentina with the Iguazu Falls in the middle. We were delighted to be mistaken for hotel guests - see we may be backpackers, but we can still pull it off!
In the middle of this mammouth journey, our last morning in Brazil was spent at the Iguazu Falls. The Brazilian side gave us a spectacular overview of the falls, and by lunchtime we were ready to cross the border to get a closer view from the Argentinian side.
Here ends our Brazilian adventure...
Hope you are all well!
Take care,
love,
Kirstie & Zena
