Coffs Harbour
We ended up spending 3 days in Coffs as the hostel was cheap as chips and provided loads of free stuff including fishing rods, kayak trips, bikes and hammocks. We even got offered a job there, but nfortunately we had to keep moving!
Day 1 - We arriived mid afternoon met a one roomy who we ended up feeding and watering as we felt sorry for her. We then all decided to go night time fishing, even though we were not even expert day fishers. Nevertheless we headed down to the port with our rods and trusty head torch pitched up on a rickety bridge and attempted a sport of fishing. We weren't very succesful, probably because we forgot the bait, we did however manage to catch a rope and the next rickety bridge....which only the most talented fisherman can do!
Day 2 - Day 2 in Coffs was pretty jam packed. We went on a canoe trip down the river in the morning which ended with rope swinging into the river which was pretty cool, we even mnged to avoid getting eaten by bull harks...result! Next, me and Jonny went back to the jetty to see if we were any better at daylight fishing. It all started out so well - we borrowed the rods, bought some white bait and made our way to the peer. We then quickly realised that we didnt really have a clue about fishing...we couldn't make the bait stay on the hook for starters. After about an hour of 'fishing' we were getting pretty fed up as we still hadn't caught anything, but that was all about to change as I hooked our first fish. Neither of us knew what to do with the poor fish, but luckily some loacals were there to save us.
However, the next catch did not go so smoothly...this time there were no locals insight and e had no idea how to get it off the hook in the midst of our panic I managed to get a mahoosive splinter lodged in my foot. As I was attending to my wound Jonny was battling his demons on how to save the fish. He first decided to hang it over the side of the jetty to give it a little rest, but the net time I looked up I saw him hitting the fish against the side of the jetty (inbetweeners stylie) in attempt to put it out of it misery, but he only suceeded in givig it severe concussion. Eventually some locals came and saved us getting arrested for fish GBH by releasing the fish from the hook, but it was too late for the poor thing as despite our prayers it just floated to the top :(. We caught one more fish that day which unfortunately ended up in a similar way to the last, Jonny then wanted to leave the jetty as he was too traumatised to continue! We ended the day (on a less violent note) with a bbq at the hostel and some goon on the beach!
Day 3 - On our last day in Coffs we biked to the Big Banana (a weird banana obsessed site, with the biggest banana construction thing at the front of it). We had a little look around then got afew banana flavoured beverages (well I did) then we headed back on our bikes.....definately too unfit for uphill bike rides! On the way back we stopped at the jetty for spot of jetty jumping. That night we were planning on just chilling out as our greyhound left at 6am, but instead we got dragged out for someones birthday to a random hotel in town, which was actually suprisingly good!
All in all Coffs Harbour treated us very well even if we did have sore heads on the greyhound the next morning!
Byron Bay
We didn't really get to see the best of Byron, as it pretty much tipped it down the whole time we were there. On the plus side our hostel was pretty cool and two of our mates from Melbourne happened to be staying there too so we pretty much spent the whole 2 days with them drinking the rain away with goon....never clever! Apart from a spot of shopping and a customary walk accross the beach that is unfortunately pretty much the highlights of our Byron visit!
