Day 4 is a bit of a doddle compared to previous days - only 222 miles. We decide on a slightly more leisurely start to the day and don't get on the road until 9:30. The Satnavs are predicting a 3pm arrival in Edinburgh so this even gives some time for a stop or two.
We're following Loch Ness which is a great view on the left on the way to Fort William. Unfortunately, there are road works and quite heavy traffic. Add the intermittent rain into the equation and it's not inspiring. We make the 65 miles to Fort William and we've both had enough already due to the slow progress and slightly colder conditions. It's amazing what a quick stop for a coffee can do for the enthusiasm levels. It's not long before were into the good stuff once more - Glencoe. It's as good as advertised and more. The steep side rock walls and valley sides are close up and very imposing. The wind is strong and gusty making bends a challenge. Oncoming lorries are surrounded by a cloud of water and they knock us for six as they pass by. Even hunching down over the tank can't stop the lurching effect as you're first sucked towards the lorries and then spat out the other side. Traffic is light and what there is is easy to pass on such long open roads.
After Glencoe the day has reached its peak. We spend the rest of the afternoon in a procession of traffic down the sides of Loch Lomond followed by some torturous miles through Paisley, Glasgow outskirts and East Kilbride. Too much traffic, too many traffic lights, crazy roundabouts and rain. We can't wait for this to be over but it doesn't seem to want to oblige. Eventually were near Edinburgh airport and spirits are raised as everything seems cleaner, tidier and more organised / well kept. We're on the A8 and riding the old stomping ground. It doesn't take long with a few squirts down some bus lanes and we're at The Caledonian Hotel. Arriving at nearly 4:30 having list 1.5 hours on arrival estimates due the the traffic and road conditions. Complimentary upgrades later and we're both checked in to our suites :-)
After a few hours of organising ourselves charging equipment, going for a swim, showering etc there's a swift pint in the Caley bar before heading to Mother India for food. It's as good as always thankfully and we're happy bunnies. Last drink in Grassmarket and it's the end of another day.
In summary, a bit of a come down from yesterday's peak but Glencoe is awesome. 222 miles and we're now over half way!
