Thursday morning started with a tasty breakfast followed by departure from the hotel at 8AM. We hit the road on our way to the Poás Volcano in nearby Alajuela. The drive up the volcano was filled with many breathtaking views of San Jose, along with coffee plants as the elevation rose. Upon arrival at the Volcano, the group walked to view the active crater. Although surrounded by clouds, the sky broke a few times which allowed some very cool pictures. After exploring a couple more paths on the Volcano, the group hopped back into the bus and started the journey down.
On the way down, the bus made a pit stop at a local store, stocked with fresh strawberries and Costa Rican chips. Locally made wine, string cheese, and coffee also filled the shop. The workers were very friendly and treated us with many free samples. The strawberries drenched in chocolate were a favorite among the team and disappeared quickly after purchase. After a 15 minute stop, we were back on the road and on our way to our first meal in the city.
After arrival to the restaurant, we were greeted by live music and games for all. The food came and was very good. (See picture) Once the food was gone and the group was full, we boarded the bus and made our way back to the hotel. The team enjoys two hours of relaxation time before the second friendly game of the trip.
Around 4:30PM this afternoon the team departed the hotel en route to the site of our next game in San Jose. Before the start of our game at 7:30PM the team held a clinic for around 30 children. During this time the guys were able to help the local children work on their game by enhancing their fundamental skills in shooting and passing culminating in a scrimmage at the end. This was a humbling and rewarding time for the team, they were able to see the pure joy and happiness that these kids experienced and see how just a few hours can impact someone.
After the clinic the Gustie's took the court against a local club team. Improvements were made from the first game which the team took advantage of, but new speed bumps came about which can be worked on and made better for our 3rd game. The night ended in a nice 84-31 victory for the Gustie's and another great meal served by our wonderful hotel staff!
Look for the blog tomorrow to include news about our visit to a local market, travel to our second hotel, as well as the Hot Springs Tour.
Thanks for following along, Chris Narum and Chad Poppen
