We spent our last full day in Hong Kong visiting Tian Tan Buddha (Big Buddha) and the Po Lin Monastery in Ngong Ping on Lantau Island.
The statue is named Tian Tan Buddha because it's base is a model of the Altar of Heaven or Earthly Mount of Tian Tan, the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. One of the five large Buddha statues in China, it is enthroned on a lotus on top of a three-platform altar. It is surrounded by six smaller bronze statues known as "The Offering of the Six Devas" that are posed offering flowers, incense, lamp, ointment, fruit, and music to the Buddha. These symbolise the Six Perfections of generosity, morality, patience, zeal, meditation, and wisdom, all of which are necessary for enlightenment.
The statue is 34 metres (112 ft) tall, weighs over 250 metric tons and was constructed from 202 bronze pieces.

Paul Duffield I once hiked with my mate as a teenager right across Lantau Island through the wild undergrowth with no back pack and one water bottle. We stopped at Po Lin for a break and I had what was probably the best tasting iced coke ever!
