After sleeping in until 10am we set out for a day of exploring. We walked into the main town, stopping off at a small bakery to have a drink and a chocolate bread cake. This was really sweet and sickly so I enjoyed it more than Ian. We went into the main centre where the Stephansdom cathedral is which is amazing to look at. It is very gothic in style and has two huge towers at the front. Inside it is full of carving and stain glass windows. It was also crammed full of people which both us hate, so having a good look around we made our escape.
Walking down to the Hoffburg palace, we spotted a Weiner stand. We couldnt resist buying a big, juicy Frankfurter to share. Ian wasnt to keen because it had mustard on it so I ate most of it, it was delish. The Hoffburg palace was huge almost as if it had been plonked in the middle of the City, it was awe inspiring. We walked all around its exterior seeing the special Spanish white horses in their stables, and finished with a well earned sit down rest behind it.
Next, we decided to walk down the the secession building which is totally different to all the other building because it is art nuvo. Inside it has different art exhibitions. Ians response to the "Art" was to say "What was that all about!". He also got his foot caught on a wire near the exhibits and nearly fell into it. Before any damage could be done, we retreated to a bar across the road where I had a hot chocolate. This was the greatest drink ever I was given a glass of hot milk and a bar of chocolate. I then had to put the chocolate in the milk and mix it with a special stirrer.
Because we had walked quoite far from where our hotel was, we decided to make a slow walk back via the staatsopher opera house. This looked amazing from outside and will be fab to see a show there. The sight that pleased us the most here though was a Spar shop opposite we went in and stocked up on tea, milk, beer and crisps for the room.
Carrying our little bag of goodies we walked through Stadtpark and sat by the lake for a while. We noticed that lots of stalls had been put up in anticipation for a market so we may come back to see it tomorrow.
Having had a proper cup of English breakfast tea, we set out to find a restaurant to eat. The main town was full of people so we settled for one of the quieter restaurants on the outskirts. It was actually classed as an American bar but nothing about it was American, it just meant the waiter spoke English. This was much to our relief because not a lot of people speak English here and apart from two other couples we hadnt heard much English. With the meal I decided to have a black Russian cocktail to celebrate. When it came out, a glass of water was brought out with it making me think that it was going to be strong. It was very strong! pretty much pure alcohol in a glass with ice as the mixer.
When we finished we went for a walk around the town and made Ian buy me a fridge magnet from a shop called "I love Vienna" for some reason he looked embarassed. Back at the hotel we had a drink in the bar, this time being given complimentary fish in a pancake which made us both feel sick because it smelt so fishy.
