8am bags onto coach... No! For once, our bags are fully unpacked, we have nowhere to go, except for a leisurely breakfast and work out what sun lounger we want to occupy by the pool. We pick the one that looks like a four-poster double bed with white cotton curtains that billow in the wind.
The biggest decisions of the day are to discuss with the concierge guy, who waits outside the restaurant at breakfast, exactly which restaurant we would like to eat in that evening and whether we have any special luxury requests for that day…
We decide not to go to any of their sister hotels for dinner and stick to the choice of Los Navigantes (international menu) and Los Carraibes (which hosts themed evenings). Both serve good food and wine, the bars have expert barmen, the mini bar is stocked to your preference (the guy even checked when I was walking past reception if I wanted more diet Tu cola - my special request)... Impressive service, topped off by concierge/butlers. I could get used to this way of life!
We are virtually the only Brits here, the vast majority being Canadians who are generally recognisable from their apparently surgically connected Costa coffee-style insulated mugs, which are generally filled with cocktails or beer. Their level of organisation is impressive, but I have to confess to being sneakily happy to see another nation other than the Brits gaining a reputation somewhere for their undeniable capacity for alcohol.
Highlights or our brief stay here were many, but worthy of special note are a gala dinner evening with both fillet steak and lobster, massage treatments (Carlitos has magic hands and one of the best I've ever had - I mean that in a therapeutic way of course, and had nothing to do with the fact he was young and cute!). We also met some great people too - Lucy and Simon (English Couple) and Solina and Brad (Canadian/Kiwi) couple - happy times hanging out at the bar after dinner and a joint meal and drinks on the final night cemented budding friendships. A visit by Anna and Guy on Tuesday afternoon, who were on our bike tour and are at another hotel only 5 mins away, was also a welcome treat. Finally, the fabulous room with ocean views and every comfort you could want was a small slice of heaven before our return to reality and a rather different part of the trip to come.
My Personal Award For Most Inventive Use Of Luxury Facilities
My top tip is that a luxury jacuzzi spa bath made an excellent improvised washing machine for all our sweaty biking clothes and allows us to leave with bags full of clean clothes for our final week on the road (saved a fortune on laundry costs, not to mention the shame of handing the sweaty salt-stained items over to someone else to deal with!)
