Being so close to Mexico from San Diego, we thought we should probably make the trip across the border. So we started driving south, crossed the border with no security, well no security going IN to Mexico, and continued down Baja California. We had no clue as to where to go or what to see, but after driving through Tijuana we quickly realized that we didn't want to stay there. We had a leaflet for a hostel in a place called Erendira, 60 miles further south, that was right on the water, so we thought; "sure, lets head there".Well we got to the turn off, which was a dirt road in the middle of nowhere, a dirt road that was filled with potholes and should not be driven in a maxima. We soon came across the "town", where we stood out so much that all the locals waved to us, whilst laughing, very friendly though. I guess they found it funny that we weren't in a pick up, with 8 other people! The hostel was in a cool location, and our "bird nest" room was at the top of the tower with 360 degree views, but there was nothing to do or see there, so the next morning we drove to the other side of the peninsula to San Felipe. This was an interesting adventure! No one seemed to know how to get there, and when we stopped to ask, we had a series of responses; "what car do you have? Oh no you can't take the road that goes directly there, you have to go all the way back and take the another road", another was "what is San Felipe?", another was "you are from New York and you came to Mexico???", but mostly they responded with "no comprende" and couldn't so much as understand the map when we pointed to our desired destination. So we had to go back and ALL the way around, which took about 6 hours, instead of the 1 hour that we originally thought. We passed many drug/weapons check points, where we were we basically just kept nodding to everything we were asked; worked pretty well until we were asked "any marijuana?"I thought we were going to be frisked down and taken away then and there. When we finally arrived in San Felipe we tried to find a campsite, but after going down a few dirt roads and getting chased out by rottweilers, we settled for a motel. The beaches were gorgeous, if you ignore all the trash. We spent most of our time in the 90F/30F ocean and eating cheap Mexican food and drinking Mexican beer. After two nights we drove back to the U.S, unsure our bowels could handle any more Mexican food… so it is off to Vegas Baby, Vegas!
