Hey everyone, thanks alot for all your messages it's really nice to get to a hostel and find messages waiting on our message board. We've arrived in Hue and already we like it more than Hanoi, the pace is much slower and people don't use their horns as indicators. We took the overnight sleeper bus from Haiphong which was a real experience, couldn't take too many pics but there was essentially bunk beds where the seats should be. They were obviously meant for Vietnamese people, but I just about squeezed in and Steph had leg room to spare! I wouldn't say it was as nice as a bed but despite the puking kids, kissing teenagers and really dodgy 'Vietnam Idol' on the telly we managed to get a pretty good night's sleep.
Since we've been here we've found a bed, been to the train station to book seats to Danang on Tuesday, had lunch and booked a tour of the sights for tomorrow.
It's Tet (New Year) tomorrow, the biggest festival of the year. Nothing ever translates exactly between cultures but there are definately elements of Christmas in Tet (or visa versa I suppose). Firstly, it is traditional for people to travel to see their families, hence why all the trains were booked and we had to get the bus from Haiphong. There is also a traditional tree, in this case orange or satsuma trees, we've seen them everywhere from public spaces to the back of motorbikes. Fairy lights are also a big deal at Tet, not always the tasteful kind but we're visitors so I suppose not able to judge. There are also elements of our New Year though and we're going to spend the evening watching the Tet fireworks over the Hue Citadel.
Love to everyone
Greg and Steph
ps - Matt - It was supposed to be a deliberate mistake, a little joke for the badminton followers out there but I suppose that just seems like an excuse now!! Hope The Loyal hasn't closed down just yet.
