Beautiful hot sunny day for our trip across the 'Lagoon' which is actually the river estuary, to the east head where the river meets the Indian Ocean. Here we were to visit the very beautiful Featherbed Nature Reserve, founded by the guy called Smith who found the Coelacanth
On the way across in what looked like a galvanised bath tub, we saw seals and gulls catching fish. This is a stunning area. I could spend a lot more time here.
At the other side we climbed into 'farm' trailers pulled by traction engines for the stunningly beautiful but steep climb up the headland. We saw the most amazing proteas and other plants and birds as well as deer. We stopped to take photos then began the descent on foot down rough steps supported by our supplied broom handles!
Lovely way down past beautiful trees and flowers with stops at view points and caves. Saw caterpillars and lizards as well as the huge bee-beetles.
Down at the restaurant we saw the tiny antelopes they breed and release. The adults are only 1ft high and we saw a 7day old baby which was not much bigger than a kitten.
Wonderful buffet meal with lots of seafood. I especially liked the pickled fish.
Back to town for some shopping and a beer. This was the first time we saw the less acceptable side of S Africa. Security on the ATM included guards with automatic rifles and we didn't feel entirely comfortable even at 3 in the afternoon.
Lovely meal after packing to move on tomorrow. .
