We drove onto Providence and as the centre was so busy we drove out to Roger Williams Park (he is the guy who founded Rhode Island). It was such a hot day so we walked around the park and went for an ice cream. There was an old fashioned Merry Go Round, with a live pianist, playing a very out of tune piano, and old arcade games surrounding the carousel.Graham therefore spent a while playing on Out Run, pretending he was 10 again! We also spent time watching the geese crossing the road, and then deciding to cross back again, causing major traffic congestions.
That evening we met our couchsurfing hosts, Kaitlyn and Chris, and they took us into the city to get takeaway in the student area.We then went to Prospect Park to eat, whilst we watched the sun set over the city, which was beautiful.Later, we went to the Water Fire festival in the centre of town. There were crowds of people there to see the bonfires which had been lit on the river, and many were taking boat rides. There were street artists, lanterns and many food stands. We walked across the river and found a stage set up, in front of one of the banks, which had Salsa dancing on it - Graham would not dance with me though! We then walked home and spent the evening chatting with our hosts.
The next morning Chris made us fantastic French Toast for breakfast and then we set off down to Narragansett. We drove to the beach and spent several hours enjoying our last day of sitting in the sun on a beach.Narragansett is a really small, pretty, beach town.As we were there out of season it was not too busy, but apparently in summer the place is packed with tourists. We took a walk along the promenade and went to the small pier, where we found they were pulling out the wreckage of a boat.We stood watching the operation for a while, along with lots of others, and when the boat finally came out of the water it was a modern boat which had caught fire.
Later that afternoon we met our next and final couchsurfing host, Carla. We went out for a walk near the pier and then to a place unknown to the tourists - Newton's Rock.We walked out onto the rocks by the sea, and it was really windy, but we got fantastic views and it was great to do a bit of climbing. That evening she made us a great Mexican dinner, which we had as a picnic on the floor, whilst chatting and having a few drinks. This was a brilliant last couchsurfing experience - so chilled out - a fitting end to what has been such a positive experience throughout.I can't explain how amazing the couchsurfing website is, as it has connected us with so many fantastic people, and made our journey through USA and Canada so memorable.
So, we said our final goodbyes to Carla, and set off for the Big Apple. We left Rhode Island, drove through Connecticut, and entered into the state of New York, for our final adventure....
