We set off north along the SH1 to Kaikoura, in search of seals and whales. As we approached the town, we could see many seals along the rocks in the sea, as well as one on the side of the road!We planned to do the coastal walk around the peninsula, but the rain started to come down quite fast, and the thought of a 2-3 hour walk in it was not appealing! So, we took the van instead, down to Point Kean, which is a seal colony. As well as there being numerous New Zealand fur seals, there were many shags and black-capped turns too... oh and lots of seagulls! We walked up to the lookout out point, and part way up a sealbarked at Graham, as it was lying the other side of the fence that Graham got too close to, and it made him jump.
From the viewpoint we spent a while looking out for whales or dolphins, but all we found were more seals. We then drove up to the higher lookout point, where you can see both sides of the peninsula and the get a great view of the town, but still no whales!Kaikoura is a really nice little town, with spectacular scenery, as the snow capped mountains are so close.
Today we woke up and the skies were clear and blue, so that could only mean one thing.... my newly booked Skydive would be on!!We got to the airfield, which is really close to town, and I was introduced to Heink, who would be my tandem jumper, and the one in charge! The whole experience was absolutely amazing, but over so quickly.I wish I could do it again, as I would be more relaxed the second time, and be able to appreciate the spectacular scenery more.Anyway, check out the photos and video, as I think they say it all...
We are in Picton now, and shall be taking the Interislander ferry back to the north island tomorrow, to continue our adventures...
