Spent the last couple of days in Jodhpur (the blue city). It is a great city with a friendly vibe. We were recommended a place to stay (Hotel Sarvar) by our previous host and it is really close to the fort and the clocktower where the main market is, so perfect. It is also cheap, so even better!
Yesterday we walked through the main shopping street then took a rickshaw to the Umaid Bhawan Palace. This was amazing and was built between 1929 and 1944, and designed by a British architect (Henry Vaughan Lancaster) for the maharaja. The palace is split into 3 sections: A home for the current maharaja, a hotel (very expensive one) and a museum. We paid about 70p each to get into the museum, it was only quite small, but interesting. We asked if we could go into the gardens, but they said only if we had lunch which was 27.00GBP per head, so we declined! After we took a rickshaw back to the clocktower and walked around the markets. I nearly got run over by a motorbike, momentarily forgetting I was in India so traffic does not always stick to it's correct side, I was watching for oncoming traffic, not that behind me!
Today we have been to the Mehringarh Fort. We walked up there after breakfast, with locals pointing us in the right direction (We wondered if they paid them to sit there instead of using signposts!) and then spent the whole day there. It was about 4.20GBP each to get in but you get an audiotour for that too. The fort is the best we have seen yet, as it is very well preserved and has a museum in too. The audiotour was great, particularly as the voice sounded like King Julien from the film Madagascar! We couldn't stop laughing, this was definately one of the highlights of the trip so far and made the fort much more fun!
Tonight we take the train to Jaisalmer and arrive at 5am. We have been recommended a place to stay again, so they are going to pick us up from the station (we hope!)
Well, as much as we like Jodhpur, there's not a huge amount to do here, so that's why we are moving on so quickly and also why this is a short blog. We did take loads of pics of the fort though, so there's lots to look at there.
