Graham & Jane
After almost 6 weeks of traveling we finally got absolutely soaked with rain. It was almost monsoonal.
The day started strangely as we were walking to get onto the bus for the 2nd day of our open top bus ticket we remarked about how there was no traffic, and all of the shops were still shut, but as it was only just 10am we thought this may be normal in Barcelona. Alas no, we were variously told it was Columbus day, or Spain National Day, it is in fact both. Spain's national day also celebrates the day Columbus landed in the new world October 12th.
This of course then interrupted our bus tour, as part of the tour goes down the main street in Barcelona, which was blocked for parades in honour of the day. We were also told there was a demonstration, but believe this was just a hiccup in the translation.
We transferred from the green line to the orange ok eventually, although we did have to have a break for coffee between buses. The orange bus travels to the west of the city taking in a number of sites including the main harbour, the main areas where the Olympics were held in and of course the Nou Camp. This being the home of FC Barcelona. (for those of you wondering, it is one of the world's largest football {soccer} clubs).
Just as we left the Nou Camp, the rain started, and within a few minutes we were moving downstairs for the rest of the journey. Unfortunately it did mean we were unable to take as many pictures as normal.
Once off the bus we decided to walk down the Rambler street finding a very nice Tapas bar for very late lunch / early dinner (4pm) by this time we were quite wet from the rain, but not as bad as we would be by the time we got back to the hotel. Following our very nice "lunner" we started to walk through the gothic quarter towards the marina to catch the tour bus back to our hotel, by the time we made it back to the room we were able to wring out our trousers, we had waterproof jackets on but they only go so far.
Graham then spent over 2hrs with the hairdryer in the bathroom drying clothes and shoes.
