We arrived at Aswan sometime just after 8am. I was really pleased to arrive as I had had a bit of an uncomforrtable night - a hard bed and frequent bathroom calls. We were transported by van to catch a ferry over to our luxurious hotel on the Nile - The Movenpick. We were greeted in the foyer with a tray of 'hospitality drinks' and we all enjoyed another glass of the hibiscus. Here it was served ice cold and quite sweet - in other places it has been not so sweet, and also we have had it hot. Anyway it is delicious whichever way they serve it.
The hotel is really lovely and we have a fabulous view from our balcony. We were all pretty washed out after our train trip so opted to just take it easy for the rest of the morning and headed off to the restaurant for lunch. The two Lindas had salads, and I just had a can of coke and a bread roll. Best to give my system a bit of a rest.
I was feeling better after a boost of sugar so we all headed off to explore the Nubian village here on the island. We wandered around the little lanes and got invited into a wee home for a drink of tea and to buy trinkets. We had hot hibiscus and all ended up buying something - Linda bought a handful of scarabs and I got a necklace.
We were followed everywhere by the locals wanting us to buy their trinkets or to eat with them. I was quite amused by a young lad wanting to sell us stuff, saying he needed money and then as we walked away he pulled out his iPhone 6 and phoned somebody.
We wandered around for a good couple of hours - encountering people, cats, chickens and sheep - before heading back to the hotel. It was pretty warm outside, but bearable. The three of us all have different heat tolerances. Linda is from Canada so she likes it much colder and is happy with the aircon on, whilst Leader Linda is used to the desert heat and likes the aircon off. I like it just moderate so I'm doing okay.
Dinner was back in the restaurant and I ordered the simple salad that Linda had for lunch as she had said it was delicious with a lovely lemony dressing. It came out completely different and with a different dressing and when I looked at it the waiter smiled and said "different chef." Linda first asked for the mushroom quiche, but the waiter said "no." Linda said "yes I would like the quiche" to which he said "no you don't - not good - been in the fridge 2 weeks and rubbed his tummy and smiled." She thanked him and changed her order to the salad with a bowl of tomato soup which he agreed was a good choice.
Yep - we don't want to be eating any dodgy food - we've both had the squffy tums and don't want to complicate things any further. I certainly enjoyed my salad of lettuce, tomato, cucumber and a few olives.
Leader Linda order the spagetti bolognase which she said was delicious.
So all in all, a pretty relaxed day, and an early night all round as we gear up for our day of sight seeing tomorrow.
