24 hours in Kuching, cat city (not that I actually saw many cats...) The 10 hour night bus from Pontianak, Kalimantan to Kuching was fairly uneventful, even the border crossing at 5am! We were befriended by an elderly man from Kuching who had been visiting his wife's family in Indonesia and who helped with translation/immigration issues!
Kuching is a very relaxed city, a beautiful waterfront, vibrant Chinatown and some attractive colonial buildings. It was good to have a day in civilisation getting laundry done and the like! A bit of a shame that we didn't have a bit longer there as I would have liked to have gone to the nearby Baku national park and see some Dayak longhouses... Another time!
Typing this on my iPhone in KK airport and taking advantage of the free wifi. We were supposed to be flying to Gunung Mulu today, but due to bad weather/poor visibility we diverted to Miri. Instead of waiting around Miri to see if we could get a flight to Mulu tomorrow we have decided to head out to Semporna on Sabah's east coast for a few days diving! Unfortunately you need to apply months in advance for a permit to dive Sipadan (one of the world's premier dive sites), but I am sure the nearby diving will be fantastic. Will update you all soon!
