Right, i'm all settled now so time to update the blog...!
I'm staying at Base backpackers in Sydney, which is in the middle of the city, in a 6 person dorm (although everyone else there left this morning so I have it to myself haha).
It's definately a lot different coming out to Sydney from Wellington... You could walk from one side of Wellington to the other in 15 minutes, it was divided into 4 quarters and easy to navigate. Sydney on the other hand is as big as London, totally busy and really hectic, full of tourists and so many different cultures.
And of course it's different getting used to the backpacking lifestyle, but totally worth it. I've met so many awesome people already in the space of 2 days. And the rooms are fine, they get cleaned everyday and I have a locker to lock all my stuff away so it's pretty safe.
I went out last night with some people from the hostel, as Ed and Holly were having some 'alone time'. Went to oxford street which is pretty much the main nightlife strip, but most of the bars are gay bars. So I ended up in a gay bar for the third time in the space of as many weeks. Since being over this side of the world i've found a penchant for whisky in most shapes and form. But i'm not a fan of normal coke... hence highly suggestive looks from the gay barman when I ordered a JD and diet coke...Clearly it is the international secret code for harbouring a secret desire for the same sex.
Then we went to a bar that I can only remember the name of because the stamp still hasn't washed off my wrist and it was absolutely hilarious...
I walked up the long stairs, queued for a few minutes, paid my entry fee and then as I walked into the club, guess who walked past me?!
Chris from Skins! (that hit teen drama depicting how life is nothing like what a few executive producers from shoreditch and vice magazine think it is)
Then I saw Cassie from skins!
And Tony from skins!
And then chris again...and again...and again...even though he had walked past me three times or so...and unless he suddenly got the power to change time or dissaperate then something wasn't right...It was then that I realised I had walked onto what seemed to be the whole cast, crew, family and friends of skins, along with every 18 year old kid from shoreditch... Literally I have never seen so many day-glo accesories, sloganned t-shirts, clashing outfits and s*** hair in my life. Still they knew how to party so it was all good in the end.
I'm missing Wellington a bit, only really started to get into the swing of things in the past 2 weeks, in which I had the best two nights of my life going on to the small hours of the morning. I met some awesome people who were so nice to us and it was sad to leave them. Plus everyone at work had been so nice and accomadating to me when frankly I probably just got under their feet.
Unfortunately a bad side of Sydney that i'm experiencing is that everything is twice the price of new zealand, more or less the same price as home. Plus there is so much to do...I went to the zoo and aquarium yesterday and saw some awesome sharks and huge rays and koalas and stuff (i'll put pictures up later) and going up to the top of the needle tower tonight which will have some amazing views. I want to climb the big bridge but it is like 60-70 quid :s
Put it this way...Tom Boyne who's over here spent 3 grand in his first couple of weeks...not sure entirely how but it's scarily believable.
It's my birthday tomorrow, but i'm not really that fussed about it. I'm away from anyone who it would mean anything to, and your 19th birthday is hardly a big one. It's a girl from the hostel's birthdays as well on the same day so we're all going out together in the night, and going to the big zoo and the opera house and all that in the day with ed, holly and tom.
I'm really enjoying myself and am actually quite annoyed I didn't plan to stay longer in Sydney as i'm leaving to go up the east coast on thursday (at 6am grrrr) There is so much to do here!
Anyways i'm going to go get some food now, so everyone should go leave a message on my message board cause it's my birthday tomorrow, and check back for photos later from some nights out in wellington and the zoo and aquarium in sydney.
Peace out foolios
