Helen is going to write this one, as soon as she can, so I don't give away too much to our pilgrims. All I can say is..... it will blow you away! (Noel writing as Helen.... she's busy and this needs to be finished) Leaving the hustle and bustle of Taungoo, we headed across the river towards, "who knows where?" The road reminded me of country Victorian roads but in a great deal of disrepair... top speed in a car only 40kmh. As we went further, the number of bikes, scooters and motorbikes decreased. The rare town had unmanned tolls where it is profitable for locals at certain times to get motorists to pay a toll to travel through the town.
Then we began the climb. James Bond would have had trouble with this road, though it was perfectly safe.
We stopped about twenty minutes out and we presented with traditional Karen shirts, which we had to don and have photos taken. Then into Than Daung Gye.
At 4000 feet, the air was beginning to get crisp.
Our three days and two nights in this place were an experience that Helen and I will gladly talk to anyone about: emotionally, spiritually and factually.
A few highlights...... they have established a prayer mountain (4800 feet).... spent half a day there........ worshipped with 1000 people on Sunday where we were the guest speakers with translators. (500 children individually blessed before the service, then they went to Sunday School). Ate very well........ icy showers(no hot water)..... visited and spent time with the oldest member of the community(93) who told us about the Japanese occupation of the village.... spent time with the boarding school students and at the kindy. We felt so safe and comfortable while we were there, even though our three night stay had been reduced to two because the local officials weren't sure about us.... I think it will be different when we come again in twelve months. For pilgrims I won't spoil it any more. Family just ask for any details. Just a couple of photograph tasters
