We are a lot further down the coast now, currently in Byron Bay. Again, another beautiful place.
After the last Blog we went straight onto an island tour of the Whitsundays Islands, to Whitehaven beach....one of the most amazing places we have both been to. With crystal clear waters and pristine silica sand it was just simply unbelievable. On this tour we got to do some snorkling on the great barrier reef....the water was so cold so we got suited up in some wet suits and spent 2 hours looking at what the reef had to offer. As you can see from the pictures....we saw plenty of activity.
After leaving Airlie beach are next stop was Rockhampton...we hoped to catch a rodeo here , its the beef capital of Australaia..with over 2 million cows there. When we arrived late Wednesday night we found out it it was on Wednedsay evening so we just missed it....shame. We ended up sleeping in a truckers layby just outside of the town as it was late and there was basically no other option..we didnt sleep well that night...very noisy. We we up early the next morning and travelled down to the towns of 1770 & Angus Water. The first part of the day involved searching for somewhere to wash....it had been a while. We ended up paying to use a caravan parks shower facilities..only $3.00 each. We had a nice day having some lunch by the beach and venturing around the towns..we had some errans to do as well. Late evening we drove back out of town to a national park where we could camp for cheap. We drove 12km at around 10kmph..due to the dirt track being unsuitable for our vehicle. We made it to Eurimbula National Park...here was a secluded beach and we watched the sun set just as we arrived. It would have almost been a perfect day if it werent for the million bugs that attacked us..my legs were covered the next day in bites..that will teach me not to use insect repellent. In the morning I heard something big moving in the bushes....wandering around was a lizard about 2 metres long..HUGE! It climbed the tree and it rap its legs around it...that big. We also had our 1st sighting of Kangaroos ...Amy has a watchful eye.
As the 12km drive along the track was boring...i made amy drive us out of there so I could sit back and relax...we went back to Angus water and spent a few ours on the beach tanning..but like always we get bored of sun bathing so we packed up to move onto Bundaberg....
Our plan was to go on a Bundaberg distellery tour..where they made Rum & Ginger Beer...when we arrived in Bundaberg and got the info about it we realised the the tour was a bit naff so we left straight away and drove late at night to head to Herrey Bay. We had a nightmare trying to find somewhere to sleep...probably covered 80km trying to find somewhere..eventually we pulled over into a petrol station along the highway. Amy went into to ask someone about somewhere to sleep....we stayed right next to the petrol station in an open field and had full use of their shower facilities...very lucky. We had an early rise to head back to Hervey Bay to try and find somewhere to Camp close to the town..We booked into a Caravan Park right by the beach in town for 2 nights. As it was the 1st time since Cairns where we had the opportunity to stay close to the main area the beer came out early...I started drinking just after 10am, the sun was out and we were enjoying some stationary time. We got some info about going onto Frasier Island..the largest sand island in the world & info about going whale watching. There was no way we could afford to do both..so we had discussion time. We both agreed that we had seen lots of amazing landscapes etc but not enough wildlife so we choose the whale watching....turned out to be a brilliant decision. It was a Saturday when we arrived in Hervey Bay and all the tours were booked up throughout the weekend so we spent the Sunday enjoying the beach and having a few drinks. There was only 2 companies we wanted to go with due to the low numbers..we booked onto a 10.5m long Catamaran. We were picked up 7am, after a McDonalds Breakie, and were on our way by 8am. We had the most amazing day...we had 2 sightings..one early into the trip, a monther , its Calf and a female Guardian. There wasnt too much activity but everyone was extremly happy already. We left them after an hour and headed further away from Hervey Bay. We followed along the coast of Frasier Island.. and 22 miles away from were we left we found 2 male humpback whales...they entertained us for 2 hours. They came within 1/4metre away from us, we made sure we had the prime position, right down by the water and the back of the Cataraman. I hope you have seen the pictures..as its indiscribable what we saw that day. We arrived back to Hervey Bay 5pm..it was long day. An amazing tour...
We left that evening and again camped at the petrol station...we left 10am to drive to Noosa Heads. Noosa heads was a lovely place but we only stayed a few hours as it was really crowded..and there was no where to stay, everywhere was booked. We did go for a walk through a small National Park where we ended up walking behind another HUGE Iguna. Very Random..I have it on Video which Ill put on shortly. Sooooo..we left to move onto Brisbane. Arriving here produced the worst day of our travels..by far. To put is in short....8 hours to find somehere to sleep...NIGHTMARE. We payed a lot of $$ to stay in a Caravan Park, which to be fair was pretty s**t, but it was closest to the City. The next day we we had a good walk around Brisbane..very nice City but not as nice as Sydney. But we still enjoyed some sightseeing around, the weather was not too good....quite cold and cloudy so it was a good day for walking. As there was no way we could afford to stay in the Camp sight again we travelled down the Main Highway and slept in a Driver Reviver area in some little town. There were no ammenities on hand and I really needed to go number 2..i hope the kids dont play around that area..ha ha ha.
The next morning we travelled back up north into City to go to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. Here..obviously...we got to see KOALAS!!!! They are the cutest thing ever! We spent some time feeding Kangaroos, we got to see Dingos & Wombats.....
So we arrived in Byron Bay yesterday....we tried to find somewhre legit to sleep but it was dark so we had a drink and look around the town and then had to drive back out 6km to stay in Truck stop... Early this morning we managed to find a nice , reasonably priced Caravan Park to stay tonight in. Its only 2km away from town so we will be strolling from the Camp site to Byron Bay to get DRUNK & PARTY!! We deserve it. Well you are all upto date now on our Road trip. We have just found out that the airlines are trying to charge us extra to fly home next year, so we may not come home now to spite them.
