Gerard's Travels
Some days are made to do lots. Some are made to do very little. Then there's today. Be prepared in today's entry for either epic amounts of ************, or a shortish blog because not really much happened. Given I'm so far behind now, it'll most likely be the latter - a shortish blog sticking to the facts of the day, then moving on to my next day to satisfy your hunger for my ********! From what I remember, I don't think it was really that late a night in the end last night. I know for certain it was dark, having waited so long for it to get dark, but I reckon I'd crashed in bed by 10pm. So from all that I conclude that I got a pretty good sleep! That's something you wanted to know, right? And I must've because I woke up feeling pretty good. I had heard it's hard to get a hangover with German beer because of the beer purity laws they have here, so that's what I'm going to go with. But that didn't mean I had the motivation to do anything. I had prearranged with Nikita yesterday (something I do remember) to join her and Alissa on a bike tour of Munich this morning, and I woke up with plenty of time to get on it, but the bed was really comfy this morning! I decided to stay in the bed and skip breakfast, which would still give me plenty of time to meet up with them before we went to the tour start. But the bed was still really comfortable, and I decided that rather than meet up beforehand, I'd just get the address of where it starts and meet them there. But the bed was still really comfortable, and I knew that with 20 minutes left before the bike ride was to start, that I was never going to make it! I text Nikita to let her know, and decided to just have an easy day of not doing much, to gear up for another big assault of the beer tents tomorrow! It was a really relieving decision, in that it gave me plenty of time to catch up on some emails and touch base with home, which made me pretty happy! Also, after a bit over a month of travelling, and in particular after Daniel left, I'd been thinking of my length of stay, and had decided that by the end of my booked Topdeck tour that I wouldn't really need my extra three weeks and instead I'd be more than ready to go home. This also fit in well with Mum and Dad's travel plans, allowing me to arrive in Amsterdam on my tour in time to spend a last couple of days with them and fly home with them. So I used this morning to try and finalise these arrangements with Peter the travel agent, and found some alternative flights home. I also had some things to organise for my onward journey from Munich today, and wanted to squeeze some gift shopping in as well! Given I was changing my plans, it actually opened up the possibility of going to Oktoberfest in Melbourne on the first weekend I was back! So that meant that, being in Munich and all, I could get a traditional costume for a friend who was also going, so that was on top of my list. Upon reflection in writing it down, this day really seems like it was busy! Maybe I'm just making it sound like that to overcome the fact I spent most of the morning in bed. Sounds a bit like me. By early arvo I'd finally dragged my lazy **** out of bed and gotten ready to tackle the day, or what was left of it! I headed back to the same store where I bought my costume yesterday, only this time I made my way into the women's side. Argh! I quickly established that I wasn't buying for myself, I'm no tranny, and that I knew I was in the women's side, but that I was there quite intentionally as I wanted to buy a present! Phew! The lady was really helpful and I found a few to choose from (I hate choice!!), and gave some information so I could have a think about it before I bought. That's still shopping ok! After that fine example of shopping I made my way towards the station, exploring a little bit of the city in the process. Munich was pretty nice, it had a sort've old industrial feel, which was glaringly different to the other German city is visited in Frankfurt. It seemed really quiet too, which at first I thought was surprising given the world's largest festival was there, but really, why would you want to be in town when there are the Oktoberfest grounds? When I got to the station I found the ticket desk to book my seat on the train to Hamburg on Thursday. Despite speaking English, he mustn't have understood it, because I most certainly wouldn't have mumbled my pronunciation of 'Hamburg' (I don't ever mumble) to make him think I said 'Dungburg', causing him to half mock me when he said no place existed! Listen properly!! We sorted that confusion out and in no time at all I had my reservation for the train to Dungburg (I said Hamburg you dick!) I then decided to walk a bit further along the street parallel to the station, with the feeling there may be another franchise of the costume shop I was in before. After a couple of kilometres I finally got that that feeling probably wasn't correct, and turned to head for my accommodation. I stopped at one more shop, for no luck, before I arrived back and had a short rest, the shopping experience really taking it out of me. Nikita had also gotten back in contact with me and we arranged for me to meet all of them and we'd all go out for dinner, as it was Alissa's last night of her trip. I got myself ready and walked down to their hostel, and actually made it to their hotel on time, which I think surprised me even more than them. They asked for recommendations of where to go, and in another 10 minutes we'd found this neat little Mexican place doing a pretty good looking burrito! I was really hungry, and it dawned on me that in my jam packed day today I hadn't even had time to eat. It's even luckier I did get that pork knuckle I can't remember last night then! We ate, and Glen and I had a couple of beers, and then made our way back to the hostel. Alissa had to finish packing, and Nikita was tired, so they called it a night, but having spent half my day in bed, and with a couple of beers under the belt, I was a bit up and about! Luckily Glen and Sarah were heading back to wander through Oktoberfest as they wanted to get some souvenirs, and invited me along. Yay, friends! We said our goodbyes to Alissa, Glen found a bloke giving away beers and got us one each (I love how acceptable it is to drink anywhere in the street here), and the three of us (yep I was the third wheel) headed off to Oktoberfest! I know why they invited me! Glen was still dirty I beat him at the gun game yesterday! He challenged me again, which I reluctantly agreed (I'd have preferred to keep my drunken victory). Unfortunately he got me, but only just. But, not content with a draw, he wanted to go for all out victory. I shot a perfect 10! ****** your plans up didn't I Glen!? As the kind-hearted person I am, I donated all my points to the loser so he could get Sarah something nice as a prize, and we moved on (I don't think he ever did in his mind though, still probably hasn't). We wandered around the festival for a while longer, including some of the beer tents we didn't see yesterday (or maybe we did, I dunno), and they bought their souvenirs. I could see it was killing Glen that he'd lost, but I wasn't going around again - there was no improvement available for me, I'd proven myself with the perfect 10, a fact I wasn't short on reminding him of, given his devastation! I capped (hehe capped, as in gun - oh, I shot a perfect 10 Glen) off the night with one of the best things ever - a half-metre long sausage! Really it wasn't that great, but you don't get to see a half-metre sausage every day so I couldn't really go past it! With Glen and Sarah content with their souvenir buying, and me content they could find their way home, I bid farewell to them and headed back to my accommodation, which was only five minutes away. I ended the day on a real high talking to some friends as they got up to start their days back home, before heading off to sleep, a big day at Oktoberfest awaiting tomorrow! Side note: I REALLY didn't do much today, and I have no idea how I turned such a nothing day into a novel. God help me.
