The Bamboo Railway of Battambang – a surviving section of the rustic Cambodian public transport system that once stretched across much of the country it was used to transport farmers produce and rice to the next towns and villages.
The bed is made of just bamboo and the frame from a slightly steadier metal. Then when the driver meets another train coming in the opposite direction, he just lifts the whole thing off the rails to allow the oncoming cart to pass.
There is no real destination for the Battambang leg of the Bamboo Train – it’s all about the experience. It’s just a little show for tourists and there are plenty of us who seem willing to pay the five dollars to ride the twenty minutes in each direction.
Phnom Samphou and The Bat Cave - 11km outside of Battambang town centre is a mountain, home to the Killing Cave of Phnom Samphou, and the Bat Cave. We decided to take a walk up to the top of the mountain (to get my steps in!) but you can get a lift to the top if you weren't feeling up for the steep walk. The Killing Cave is rather disturbing and still houses the remains of those killed there during the Khmer Rouge genocide. The Bat Cave offers an amazing spectacle at around 6pm each day – thousands and thousands of bats leave the cave as dusk falls, a steady stream flying out for around 45minutes.
Battambang is a great town to visit on you way to phenom penh or the south coast of Cambodia. We stayed at Here by Dragons which was a great hostel and offered a huge selection of amazing food.
