Thurs July 1st (Glasgow)
It was an overnight flight and I arrived in Scotland at 7am Scotland time (2am EST). I then purchase a bus ticket and found my way to the hostel where I unloaded my gear and walked around a little bit.I was quite exhausted so I ended up taking a long nap. When I woke up I decided to take my laptop down to the bar to see if I could get on the internet. I was actually able to get on-line (I hadn't earlier) and then Heather came and joined me. It was so great to see a familiar face!We hung out a little before going up and get her gear stowed as well. We then walked around a bit…went down to the river, walked across the bridge…etc. Feeling hungry, we got a pizza close to the Union Station and sat outside on the walk to eat it.A guy came up and tried to get us to let him have a slice. He was getting a bit obnoxious until a friend came and took him away...thank God!
When we got back she did laundry and I read some more until I fell asleep and slept very well.Had a great bunk mate called Jo that was really enjoyable to chat with.
Fri July 2nd (Glasgow)
Heather and I got going around 8:30am and we walked to a great breakfast place where they served some great breakfast…hash browns, bacon, sausage, egg, toast, grilled mushroom and grilled tomato.Heather got one with black pudding which she quickly decided not to eat! After we were done eating, we started walking back along the Clyde River to the Glasgow Green. There was a monument there and some lookouts over the river. We also took in the People Palace and Winter Gardens. The palace was not palatial, but more filled with a lot of history of Glasgow.Basically a free museum. It was interesting though. The winter garden was a small indoor conservatory type of garden attached to the People Palace.Outside the palace was a great monument that had four sides dedicated to the four different 'colonies' that Britain and started….Canada, India, Australia, South Africa.Queen Victoria was at the very top of the monument. It is the largest terra cotta monument of its time.
We then got tickets for a Sightseeing Glasgow hop on and off bus.We basically used it to take a tour around the city without having to get on and off because we didn't have time.We did stop by the Science Museum (SECC).Since it charged, we simply walked by and then saw the 'tall ship' as well.We got back on the bus again and rode it until we reached the St Mongo Cathedral and Neocropolis. The cathedral was just fabulous.Great architecture and just very austere and wonderful to visit. We then made our way to the Necropolis which is really a huge old cemetery with sinking graves and some stones you can no longer read alongside the huge ornamental and elaborately engraved tombstones. You could definitely tell who were wealthy and influential…
We then decide to walk back to Queen Stations so we could find out the exact time of departure in the morning. We also wanted to time our walk back to the hostel.Along the way we stopped by a Primark (similar to a Walmart) and took a quick peek around. We then swung by and picked up kebobs which are basically pita bread that is filled with different ingredients.Mine was basically a chicken kebob with coleslaw, onions, and sauce poured over it all. They were pretty good.
After we got back we chatted some with our new hostel roommates and then came downstairs to do some internetwork, however the internet was still causing issues, so I just typed up my blog to upload later!
