Time to explore Canberra, I hadn't really planned much, I checked out the information board in reception and decided to go to Parliament Hill. This is the Australian version of The houses of Parliament. I knew I was able to get the bus there. So I had breakfast, and got on the number 2 bus across the road. I didn't really know where I was going, so I followed the map I had with the route the bus driver was taking. To be honest I could see where I needed to get off. It was a 10 minute journey and when i arrived I walked to the front of the building. You could see all the way into the distance the building in front was the old parliament residence, even further than that you could make out another building which I later work out to be the Australian war museum. I walked into the government building, had to go through security. I'm always the one to have my items scanned for explosives! Maybe I have a look about me? Inside was massive, and I didn't really know where to start. I asked at the information desk for a map, she then told me a tour had started upstairs 5 minutes ago, and I could go and join that! Perfect, an hour guided tour, I'm pretty sure I would be done after that. I went and met the group in the main hall, a place the Australian prime minister would hold events, the guide also said people from the general public can hire this hall. They have had schools hire it for proms. It would be the perfect place to hold a G-Harp Halloween party! Lol. Might get expensive flying everyone to Australia. We moved on to the house of representatives and the senate. Identical room except for the colour one was green the other red. After the guided tour had ended I went up into the roof terrace. It's hard to explain but the building had banks on both sides from the ground to the roof top, like a massive grass hill. You could walk down it except there was a fence. The views from the top were great, overlooking all of Canberra, not that there is a lot to see. The sun was bright, not a cloud in the sky, it was could though.
Once I has done everything and seen what I wanted to see at parliament hill, I returned to the centre of Canberra on the bus. Grabbed some lunch before hitting the Australian Museum. It's a new museum only been open 10 years or so, the architecture was really cool and very modern. It's really good that all these places are free. Apart from museums there doesn't seem to be a great dealto do here. Good job I'm enjoying them. I started off in the Australian museum going around the aboriginal exhibit. I've learnt a lot over the pass 6 weeks in Australia about what had happened to the original Australian people. It was really good to see this display. There were loads of things to see and I don't want to bore you in my blog, but i really enjoyed it. Headed back to the hostel.
I had a walk around the city, and yes the city is strange, everyone goes home at five o'clock. But I actually like it, not sure I could have spent a week here but two days is perfect! Had dinner and had a quite night, at least I have my iPad and free wifi! I've done loads today and heading to the War Museum tomorrow before my flight to Sydney!
