Plaza de la Villa
The Plaza de la Villa is located in the historic center of Madrid ( Spain ), next to the street, which forms its northern face. It originated three small streets, for the primitive medieval streets of the city: Elbow appears in the east, the Cord to the south and the west of Madrid.
Around it are the main facades of three buildings of great historical and artistic value, erected in different centuries. The oldest is the House and Tower Lujanes ( XV century ), built in Gothic-Mudejar style, that sits on the eastern side of the square.
Next in antiquity the Cisneros house ( XVI century ), a palace plateresco that closes the southern part of the enclosure, and the Casa de la Villa ( seventeenth century ), of Baroque style , one of the venues of the City of Madrid , located in the western part of the square.
History
The Plaza de la Villa was one of the main centers of medieval Madrid, given its location midway between the gate of Guadalajara and ofthe Vega , two of the most important accesses to the city during the Middle Ages .
Formerly known as Plaza de San Salvador, the church of the same name that stood in the street, in whose porch meetings were held City Hall , and today is remembered by a plaque located on the site where the temple stood (approximately the 70th of that route).
In the fifteenth century , the Plaza de la Villa adopted its current name, coinciding with the awarding of the title of Noble and Loyal Villa received by Madrid, from King Henry IV of Castile ( 1425 - 1474 ).
House and Tower Lujanes
These two buildings, built in Gothic-Mudejar style, are the oldest, between civilian objects, which are now preserved in the capital. Built in the fifteenth century and its name refers to its original owners, the family of the Lujanes, wealthy merchants home Aragon . This lineage various shields, appearing on the cover are preserved Gothic main facade.
According to tradition, the tower was hosted King Francis I of France ( 1494 - 1547 ), taken prisoner at the Battle of Pavia ( 1525 ). It now houses the Royal Academy of Moral and Political Sciences .
Casa de Cisneros
It is a mansion built in Plateresque in the year 1537 , at the request of Benito Jiménez de Cisneros, nephew of Cardinal Cisneros ( 1436 -1517 ), of whom it is named.
The facade on the Plaza de la Villa was lifted in the early twentieth century , when the Madrid City Council acquired the property from the palace and proceeded to integrate reform within the premises of the Casa de la Villa. Remodeling, carried out in line with the original plans, was entrusted to the architect Luis Bellido and González , who is also due to the passage that connects the Casa de Cisneros with the Town Hall.
The facade facing the street Sacramento, which was initially the main, is what brings the greatest historical and artistic values and that just was amended during such renovations.
According to tradition, this palace served as prison to Antonio Perez ( 1540 - 1611 ), secretary of the king Felipe II . In it was born politician Alvaro de Figueroa and Torres, Count of Romanones ( 1863 - 1950 ). General Ramon Maria Narvaez ( 1800 - 1868 ), one of its residents died in this place.
Casa de la Villa
The so-called Casa de la Villa occupies the former site of the houses of the Marquis de Vallecerrato , D. Juan de Acuña , president of the Councils of Finance, Indian and Castilla on until his death in 1615, at which it is acquired by the Madrid council that, since ancient times, met at the border Church of the Savior , now defunct. However, preparation and reform lasted until its inauguration in 1692. In this house lived the Duke of Osuna D. Pedro Giron ( 1574 - 1624 ), when on Holy Thursday of 1621 he was imprisoned by King.
Old Town Hall in the city of Madrid ( 1693 - 2007 ). Despite different opinions, the most reliable seems to be indicating that its construction began around 1645 , from a design by the architect Juan Gómez de Mora , and was completed in 1693 . Gallery Tuscan columns of the façade on the main street is the work of Juan de Villanueva ( 1789 ).
It is home to the City of Madrid , although from November 5 of 2007 the Madrid City Hall moved to Communications Palace , being this building almost exclusively host the Municipal Council.
Bazán Monument
To mark the third anniversary of the death of the marine Don Alvaro de Bazan ( 1526 - 1588 ), in 1888 the council decided to erect a monument in his memory. However, it was not opened until December 19 of 1891 . Since then it appears in the center of the square, and is now surrounded by a large parterre.
The pedestal was designed by architect Miguel Aguado and sculptor Mariano Benlliure ( 1862 - 1947 ), the latter being the author of the bronze statue.In the front of the pedestal is the inscription "A / DON / ALVARO / DE / BAZAN," and on the back the verses that Lope de Vega spent the honoree:
Turkish fierce in Lepanto ; / In the Third French; / Sea and across the English, / they had to see me horror. / King served and honored homeland / they say better who I was / by the Cross of my name / and the cross of my sword.
Bazan appears treading a flag Turkish , wearing medium armor and band Captain General of the Navy on his chest, resting his left hand on the hilt of his sword and carrying a flare right in general.
