I survived the first night in the dirty hotel! The weird stains were still there but no bugs in my bags! I refused to eat breakfast and instead went to the local pharmacy to stock up. Soon the bus had arrived and it was time to head to the killing fields.
On the way the guide told us the history and how they would search for all the educated people so they couldn't up rise. Once they had found them they were sent to prison to be interrogated and get information on their family and friends. Once they had given their information they were transferred to the killing fields at night were they were killed in mass graves. Chemicals were poured on to stop the smell and stop people from wondering what was happening. At the killing fields some of the graves had been dug up whilst others were underneath our feet with bones and clothing coming up from the ground. The shrine in the middle had lots of skulls. A sad reminder or what had happened not so long ago.
After this we went to the prison were the people were kept and some tortured. We learnt the stories of some of the survivors and met 2. It is unthinkable of what they went through. I feel like today was somewhere and something that you have to do when visiting Phnom Penh. I think we need to understand what happened and learn from it so it doesn't happen again.
After this we headed to a local restaurant for lunch. They were non for profit with the funds going to children. We then decided to get tuk Tuks to the Russian market and try some battering skills. I got a t shirt, singlet and shorts.
After arriving back at the hotel I went and got a local massage. The lady used many body parts including her feet and knees. I felt so relaxed after it.
Next was dinner where I ordered the local spicy dish, which wasn't even that spicy.
After dinner we walked through the night market and then headed to gecko bar. I wanted a t shirt so I tried to drink 3 buckets but only made it through 2 before getting a hand with the 3rd. We then went to the backpacker bar next to the hotel and had some fun before heading back to the hotel to see a gecko run into a room. All up a long and emotional day but worth it! Can't wait for beach tomorrow and hopefully a clean hotel room.
