Up this morning and as soon as mum stood up she started groaning about how sore her feet were. I must admit, mine are a little tired too. We packed up all our stuff and left it in storage while we walked to Schloss Nymphenburg about 10mins away. This palace was started in 1664 as a villa but eventually became the royal family's summer residence. The first room you walk into takes your breath away. The ceiling has this beautiful ceiling and the colours are so vibrant as are the paintings on the rest of the wall. You could sit there for ages and just look, unfortunately you would end up with a sore neck.
There was about 20 rooms to visit and one is called the Gallery of Beauties. King Ludwig I chose 38 beauties from a shoemakers daughter to a princess to be painted and hung in here, including his mistress. We also visited Marstall Museum which is housed in the original stables and contains all these different royal carriages and sleighs and riding gear. One of the carriages was being cleaned. It wouldn't be an easy job as it was quite intricate.
Back to pick up our bags and time to lug our load for the first time on public transport. At the train station, we were able to pick up some reasonable priced lunch - 2 baguettes, one with salmon, the other with ham and salad and a bottle of water for about 8euro. Thought it would be heaps more expensive at the station.
Loaded our bags onto the train once it arrived and settled in. I soon realised the water I had bought was not still but mineral. With 8 mins to the train left, I ran back to the shop to buy another and made it back in time. Mum was a little worried she was going to leave without me, sticking her head out the door to make sure I would make it back. We caught the regional train to Bamberg via Nuremburg. It meant for a longer trip but was about 50euros cheaper. It was nice to just sit and relax anyway. At one train station along the way, there were hundreds of new cars on transport carriages ready to head somewhere, what got our attention was the Audi's wrapped up like Christmas presents.
We are staying at a backpackers here, but have our own room. Not too far from the train station which is perfect since it is only one night. We dumped our gear and headed into the town to visit the Christmas markets. It appeared that about half the goods sold in these markets had nothing to do with Christmas. Even one selling kitchen goods. But they were decorated pretty and still lots of wine & sausages being sold. I bought a new hat and scarf and mum bought a hat with a little visor to try and keep her glasses dry. We bought a couple of decorations from here as well as a store that we came across.
We walked into the old town which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Headed to a restaurant that was recommended but they were full so went next door. No menus in english but the waitress tried to explain what different items were. Mum was going to go for the fail safe option of schnitzel but an American couple sitting near overheard and recommended a fish dish they had eaten so mum went with that. I had a mixture of sausages, saurkraut and rosemary potatoes. The meals were lovely but I've never seen so many chips on a plate with mum's fish. Back past the markets and mum stopped in for dessert, chocolate covered marshmallow, the other night we had chocolate covered bananas and strawberries. So in for an early night tonight and will explore the town more tomorrow before heading to our next town, Wurzburg.
