Did I say last night was the biggest piece of schnitzel I've seen. Tonight's definitely topped it. It was one big piece, about the size of an 8" pizza. Huge, but good!!
This morning we got the train back to Melk (we had passed it on the river cruise). I had been told it wasn't too be missed. It is apparently the most famous Abbey in Austria and still has monks living here. It is a Benedictine Abbey, dating back to 1069. It has been destroyed by fire some time in the past. During winter, you can only tour the Abbey with a guided tour. Unfortunately, as most tours do, it was rather quick and didn't really get time to view the items on display in the museum. The library was gorgeous and the monastery church just as good as the ones we have seen previously. It looks like it is full of gold, but it is mainly wood that has been gilded. In the marble hall, the painter loved optical illusions so when you look at the painting on the ceiling from one point, the columns are upright but when you look from a different location, they are leaning. There was also a stunning staircase that had a mirror put down at the bottom so when you look down it looks like it goes for ever. We were glad we did the trip out there to see it.
Back to Vienna and we visited Stephansdom (St Stephan's Cathedral). It was very dark in here and you could only visit the central part of the church if you paid. If you didn't, you could just look from the back or the side. We paid to go in but I must admit, I think some of the other churches we have seen were just as spectacular, if not more so. It was 4 euros each to visit which is the most I have ever paid to visit a church.
Outside we checked out the markets and christmas lights before heading to a local restaurant for dinner. Mum still has her cold so just wanted some soup which she was able to get and I attacked their famous schnitzel. Not sure how I did it, but I did finish it. It was very thin though and very tender.
Back to our accommodation and we have made sure our bags are packed as we have to catch a 6.45am train tomorrow morning so we have lots of time in Budapest to explore. Overall thoughts on Vienna is that you need more time than we had to do it justice. There are over 100 museums to explore if you so wish and who knows how many churches.
